THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. MONDAY, APRIL 1, 1WT. insanitary school buildings CALL FORTH CAUSTIC COMMENT FROM PHYSICIAN AND EDUCATOR Need of New Build' ings Is Empha sized. THE GEORGIAN’S PLEA HAS EFFECT Board of Education Would Do Better if It Had Funds. Th* Georgian's crusade for more „.|,ool buildings and for Improved san- mry conditions In several of the old buildings Is beginning to have results. Following the announcement that new tio.000 school buildings would be erect, ed In the Third and Fourth wards comes h letter on the Insanitary con- .ililon of Crew Street School from Dr. I. .Master, who says It Is "insanitary, badly ventilated, badly lighted, badly healed, badly overcrowded and a dan gerous trap for undermining the health of our children and teachers." In reply to this President L. Z. H.isser of the board of education, says that no one Is more clearly aware of the truth of this statement than the tumid of education. He goea further and save that It Is not the only achool building In the city "Inaanltary and un- lit for use." naming l.ee street. Marietta stieet. Dr. A Ulster In hi* card to the public does not inlnce words, but drives straight to the facts with telling force. He says, In part: "I'retr Street School Is. without a doubt, an Infliction upon our children, h Is Insanitary, badly ventilated, badly lighted, badly heated, badly overcrowd ed and-a dangerous trap for undermin ing the health of our children and teachers. This antiquated apology for a school house Is continually laying the foundation for scrofula, tuberculosis, eye diseases and numerous other ali ments in our children; and while death only occasionally takes one as an Im mediate sacrifice, many of these little Innocents are victims of disease in aft er life on account of having attended t'rew Street School. I call upon every father nnd mother of the Second ward either to And ways and means to reme dy this evil or take their children away from this dangerous trap. Come for ward. parents, and announce how many of you have had to take your children away from Crew Street School because their health was being undermined. Sickness in 8chool. "I have had experience with my two boys, who were continually ailing as long ss they attended this school, and who now are in fine health and de veloping satisfactorily since they are In a private achool. I am In favor of com mon school education, but I will not i*rmlt mine, nor the children of my friends and patients, as far as I can help It, to wantonly sacrifice the health and future welfare of the little^ ones in the apathy and cupidity of the au thorities. President Rosser not only admits ths truth of Dr. Amater's Indictment, but says that other school buildings ars In even a worse condition ' tlmn Crew Street. He says that all of the frame buildings have outgrown their useful ness. His statement Is as follows: The board of education knows as II, If not better, than anybody else that the Crew Street School Is not fit for the purposes for which It Is being used. Rut that Is not the only schoo house In the city that Is Insanitary and unlit for use. There are the Dee Street School, the Marietta Street School, the Fair Street School, and the Walker Street School. They are all worse than the Crew Street School. In fact, all the old frame buildings have outgrown their usefulness. 'As to the board of education not taking any notice of reports about the Crew Street School, I wish to call at tention to the fart that I and other members of the board went before the finance committee of the city council the first part of this year and stated that some of the school buildings were unlit for use, were Insanitary, and disgrace to a civilized community, made It ns strong as words could have made It. I believe that In the near fu ture, perhaps next year, the city coun cil will give us money to expend on these old buildings. The city has i so fast that It has been Impose! build the new schools, and at the same time keep the old buildings In repair. We erected new buildings because If we had not, hundreds. If not thousands, of children would have had no chance to go to achool at all. We thought the old frame buildings might last a year or two longer. "The fact that the Crew Street School Is In bad repair Is no news to the board of education, and the same Is the case with the other schools I have men tioned. We are doing the best we can, and we hare tried to use the money given u* to the very best advantage of the city and the people."
