A man and woman who occupied a seat near the window througli which the bullet passed were sprinkled with particles of glass. The Incident created a mo mentary panic In the coach. When the train reached the city the pollco were notified and with New Y£rk Central detectives are conducting an Investigation at the scene of the shooting. High waves have been dashing over the sea wall outside the harbor and many, streets are flooded. The famous Prado Is a heap of water almost aa far as the Central Park. In some cases those caught In the flood have had to swim. The police aro rescuing people from dwellings of one- story In boats. It Is feared that some of the housdb under water will col lapse. The fire department has been called out to Vedado, where the water Is re ported to be endangering lives. The men are searching the property along the sea front and rescuing those In danger. The water has put a stop to the oar traffic between Havana and Vedado. .The waves are breaking oyer the Moro castle light house, sometimes completely hiding It from view. The transport Sumner was scheduled to sail today, but her departure was delayed because of the heavy sea. An uniden tified British steamer has been stand ing off the entrance to the harbor for twleve hours, It being too dangerous for her to attempt to enter until the sea subsides. According to Dr. Walter Benzel, the sanitary su perintendent of Manhattan, the woman Is literally a living typhoid factory. She herself was stricken with the disease about six years ago. It ran the ulcers and recovered. Now It Is found that In all that time she was declared cured of typhoid she has kept on nucleating and developing typhoid germs. Though herself Immune, the germs which she has been developing have been a con stant source of danger and contagion to all with whom she has come In con- tact. Suspicion was attracted to the woman and typhoid appeared In various families where she" was employed, and when she was taken to the hospital the suspicion was contlrmed through the culture test. . The order states that the men who walked out are t« be forever debatred from registering for employment at tho yard, save with the express permission ‘ the department. GIRLS APPEAL TO POLICE FOR BETTER PROTECTION Richmond, Va., April 2.—One thou sand eight hundred white girls, em ployees of the various stores in the city, have, with their employers, en tered complaint at police headquarters of the Inadequate protection offered them after leaving their work at night. The girls claim that many negro men habitually congregate at certain cor ners and that they are subjected to rude and uncomplimentary remarks In passing. There nre saloons located on the corners mentioned, and the proprie tors of the establishments employing the girls say that If conditions aro not Immediately bettered they will use their Influence to close up the places. HOTEL GUESTS ARE FRIGHTENED Clouds of smoke that tilled the cor ridors of the Majestic Hotel, In Peach tree, at 8 o'clock Mohday night, caused no little excitement among the guests, and there whs an exodus from the up per floors to tho flrst floor to learn the cause. Many thought the hotel was burning down, but they were quickly reassured when they found the Are was a small affair In an annex In the rear. Decatur, Ala, April 2.—There are now In the Farmers' Union warehouse at llartselle 250 bales of cotton belong ing to various farmers of Morgan coun ty who are holding for higher prices. The members of the union here say that they are confldent that It will be only a few years until the union In the Bouth Is so strong that they will be able to control the price of cotton m the United Htates. The union has pur chased several car loads of guano and the members of the union get this at wholesale prices to use on their farms. CROWN PRINCE AND WIFE MENACED BY RUNAWAY. Special to The Georgian. Berlin. April 2.—Crown Prince Fred erick William and the 1 crown princess had a narrow eacape from accident yea- terday while driving home in a dog cart from a vlalt to Prince Eltel Fred erick. The horse took fright at an au tomobile and bolted. COTTON ACREAGE INCREASE PREDICTED IN MISSISSIPPI. Special to The Georgian. Jackaon, Miss, April 2.—President Walter Clark, of the Mlaalaalppl Cotton Association, who has made a careful study of the matter, Is confldent that the Increase In cotton acreage in Mis sissippi this year will not be leas than 10 per cent.
