THE THEATERS i ■ | James O’Neill'a “Monte Cristo.” t\V imiy In licit at Blaney’g riots of death on tin- popular stage; ire may laugh at Lincoln Carter's massacres and murders; but for genuine, all-wool melodroma, ••Monte Cristo" makes all the rest look like Piintoral Idylls. But all you old theater goers know that alread}’. It is a genuine ^tonsure, In these days of divorce dramas dnd society scandals, to conic across one of the old timers like this. The most tired of nil the tired playgoers sat up Monday right at the Grgud and watched the plot thicken. “Action's the thing," says the playwright of the ten twentv-thlrty—and action's the thing that him made "Monte Cristo" rival “The Old llonie.uead" in longevity. May It live until u NVIirs grandson is os old os he. The veteran actors betrays his age—one ran not deny that. In the first act, the i aged in prison, Mr. O’ Mix <•< mm, a tiding stage presence Is given full opportunity In the death scenes, lie towers nlmve the rest and commands an at tention which throws his compauy Into obscurity. U. G. “My Tomboy Girl.* 1 Tlier is pleuty of fun, plenty of music jiuiI plenty of excitement at tbe Bijou this week, all being cleverly mixed by that clever mixer, Charles E. Disney. Miss Lottio Williams Is right there with the goods lu the title role of “My Tom- iniy Girl,’’ and tbe audience that filled tbe popular theater at tho opening presentn tloa of the dellgtful musical seml-mclo- drama, tbe other “semi’’ being good com edy, encored lustily. There were plenty of neat costumes, and nil were tilled. ‘ Taken a sa whole, “3Iy Tomboy Girt" Is one of the most pleasing and entertaining plays that has been pro duced at the Bijou this season, and the cast Is certainly one of the most capable. Will .1. Kennedy, as Herman Vou Ben tlnctlve and the most enjoyed feature of the performance. Hta singing and mono logue work were alao enthusiastically re* Read, as , __ *’Posiom, the Laxy Nigger," did some clever work. There is a little too much gun play er It would not be written by Blnney— and a few stunts are somewhat “raw," but no kick came from the audience, bo there is no kick coming here. The attrac tion Is well worth wnile. Hero nil the week. J. D. G. “Tho Girl and tho Governor.” The Grand Wednesday and Thursday night and Thursday matinee has as Its ot tering the first local appearance of tbe i:<1 wards-Brenner comic opera, “The Girl nnd the Governor," which serves to show Jolly Jefferson DeAngells In a role where lie can give vent to hla vocal and fun- making powers. With him Is a company nml chorus said to exceed eighty members. An advance peep at tho plot and story "f "The Girl and the Governor" reveals the tender attachment of Don Pascal De* Mcgqulta, a roguish Upanlsh-America a gov* ernor. for tho daughter of an English sea captain whose ship he has scuttled. Julian Edwards’ music Is already well known from “Brian Boru," “The Three Mtukefeere," ••Dolly Vardan" and “Tho Wedding Day," and “The Girl and tbe Governor" is said to be oven more tune* pod melodious than were these. With Mr. DeAngells will be seen Estelle wentworth, one of the most beautiful worn- en in light opera: Richie Ling, tenor; Maude Leekley, contralto, and Henry Vogel, basso and comedian, along with a number of other singers, not to mention a double chorus of four-score. The sale of senta Is now going on nt the Grand box office, and a lurge attend 1 oucc is already assured. Mme, Sembrich’s Voice. Beautiful music expressed through the medium of a perfectly cultivated voice of rare sweetness, purity and sympathy, Is more nearly akin to divine Inspiration than any other nrt. Cultivation within itself is not the sole requisite. The singer must know and understand; must realise the dis appointments, the pain, the sorrow, the flush of triumph, the sweetness of success, to properly appeal to her audience. That Is the secret of the great success which has been accorded Mme. Marcella Scmbrlch. who will lie heard iu concert at the Grand next Friday night, April 6. From a wisp of a girl who played the violin at balls and parties and weddings that she might earn sufficient with which to buy fowl for her self nnd father, she has mounted-the lad der of success until now she is proclaimed by dlscrlmuatlng critics everywhere as the greatest singer the world has ever known. The sale of seats Is now tmlng conducted, nnd indications are that a brilliant audience will be in attendance. The prices range from $3 downward.
