Amerlous, aa, April S.—An Investi gation of the Sumter county chalngang may be made as result of a dramatic scene which occurred In the court while Judge Crisp was placing an additional sentence on Gus Nelson, an escaped state convict and also an escape from the county chalngang. The negro broke Into tears and made statement which muy result In an official investigation of the Sumter county chalngang, from which to many escapes have recently been made. Nelson declared that the recent nu merous escapes were Ibo result of al leged cruelty practiced upon the con victs. Instead, Chief Turner and his men will retain their offlees as long as the present county commissioners are In office. In fact, they will prac tleally b* under a civil service sys tem. Although there has been no law passed to this effect. It Is understood that this policy has been adopted by the commissioners, and that Chief Tur ner and his men will remain In office without the formality of being re- eltced every year. Cedartown, Ga., April 6.—Cedartown will be host on the 15th and 16th of May, when the annual meeting of the North Georgia and Alabama Volunteer Firemen's Association will be held here. This association Is composed of the departments from Cedartown, Rome, Dalton, Cartcrsvllle, Calhoun and Grlf. fin, Ga., and Gadsden, Anniston, Pratt City and Talladega, Ala. These ten cities will gather at the annual tournament In Muy to compete for several hundred dollars In prizes offered by the Cedartown Fire Depart ment. There will bo several hundred volunteer firemen from theso. cities, besides thousands of visitors In Ce dartown at this affair, and the cltlsens of this city, through Its firemen, will give the visitors a great time.
