Jones, past exalted ruler of the Kllce and one time clubman and aoctal favorite, and the authorities are searching for traces of poison. Jones was found dead lh his room n the Clifton Hotel and with the body were his wife, a bride of six months, ami W. F. McLeon, a traveling sales man. On the floor of the room and on the tablea were champagne bottles. At the coroner's Inquest Mrs. Jones and McLeon testified that about o'clock In the morning Jones began vmnltlng and In two Jiours was dead The stomach and some of the cham pagne were sent to Chicago for an analysis. This action was due to a rule passed by the trus tees In 1893 which prohibited any mu sical organisation of the university from leaving town, consequently the Glee Club engagements In Savannah, Jacksonville, Augusta, Macon, Atlanta and Columbus have been cancelled, and until the trustees meet In May no per formances can be given except In Ath ens and In Qalncsvllle, when the cadets aro In camp. Forsyth 8t„ Atlanta, Qa, Brief News Notes Preparations for holding the military fair for the benefit of the Fifth regi ment of the national guard are being pushed rapidly to completion. At a meeting of the officers of the regiment, held at the Hunter Street armory Mon day night, a number of committees to complete the necessary arrangements were appointed. The fair will probably be opened within the next two or three weeks, and will continue two weeks. It Is re ported by those who have the matter In charge that the prospects of a most successful fair are very promising. The regiment will leave Atlantu for James town on June 8. William Stead, the famous English editor, called on President Roosevelt Tuesday and discussed with him mat ters relative to the approaching peace conference. Commander Robert E. Peary has been granted leave of absence for three years by the navy department. The time will be devoted by him to Arctic exploration. Governor Berkhain, of Kentucky, has offered a reward of 1900 for the per sons guilty of destroying tobacco beds und barns lu western Kentucky. The strike of longshoremen'at Ham burg. Germany, Is regarded as serious by tbe authorities. Attacks have been made upon strike breakers Imported from England. CARNEGIE’S SUDDEN ARRIVAL UPSET RECEPTION PLANS Pittsburg, April 10.—Andrew Carne- glo abandoned his plan to bring hi* distinguished guests to the dedication of the Carnegie Institute here on t\ special train and arrived here unex pectedly on a regular rain, thereby up setting the plans of the trustees to give him a great welcome. It Is said that the activity of mys terious train wreckers who have been making trouble for the Pennsylvanin Railroad Company for three weeks Is responsible for tho derision that the foreign visitors will travel in extra Pullmans attached to a regular Pitts burg express. C., April 10.—Contin ued war against illlterary with more school houses and better educational facilities was the slogan of the speak ers at the conference for education in the South, which convened here yes terday In tenth annual aesslon. The strikers at last night’s session, at which Foster Peabody, of New York, •resided. Included Governor Glenn, of S’orth Carolina; Dr. 8. C. Mitchell, of Richmond; President Judson, of Chi cago university; Dr. F. W. Hlnltt, of Iaexlngton, K>\, president of the Cen tral University of Kentucky, and Pres ident F. Wickllff Hose, agent of the Peabody fund. Governor Glenn discussed the atti tude of the south, toward the so-called education movement, and remarked that the Southerner considered Presi dent Roosevelt the greatest ruler the orhl has ever known. The attendance Is somewhat reduced * compared with former meetings of the conference. Tho session was for mally opened by the election of Dr. 8. C. Mitchell, of Richmond, Va., to act as president pro tern.. In the absence of President Robert C. Ogden, who was prevented from attending the meeting on account of Illness. The address of clcnme was delivered by Governor Glenn, to which Dr. Mitchell respond ed. The principal feature of the morn ing session was the reading by Pres ident Alderman, of the University of Virginia, of a paper on "The Southern Education Board." prepared by Edgar Gardner Murphy, of Montgomery, Ala., secretary of the board. A message from President Ogden, addressed to the conference, asking that another be elected president of the conference, as read by Dr. Mitchell.
