There la good undertone to the secu
rities market abroad this morning,
based on the favorable budget pre-
sented yesterday, and pomment is very
favorable. The money market Is Im
proving, Bank of England strength
ened reserves and no uneasiness from
French demands.
Shorts covered freely at the close

to cover outstanding contracts today.
The drop 4n wheat In all domestic

when the scare subsided.

Town Topic.: Realizing on the
strength ot the favorable bank state
ment, prospects may bring about a re
action today. In such case we would
buy Delaware and Hudson, Reading,
Southern Pacific, Kansas City South
ern, Union- Pacific, Canadian Pacific
and all the Hill stocks.
Cotton and wheat should be pur
chased only on rather severe setbacks.
New York Commercial: What are
known as the granger roads will be
compelled to suffer, so far as the prices
of their stocks are concerned, from the
crop damage stories that will be circu
lated for some time to come. There
can be nothing In the shape of authen
tic Information aa to growing crops,
so that the rumor-monger has things
all his own way.
Stories of .note Issues on the part of
the railroads constantly are In the
market, with no particular dates at
tached, however. There are two sides
to this particular question. Not only
does the great majority of the roads
need money for betterments. Improve
ments and extensions, but a lot of re
funding Is to be done this year, a fact
thoroughly appreciated by the banking
Interests which will have the matter In
hand.
The relative popularity of Union and
Southern Pacific Is the subject of a
good deal of discussion In trading cir
cles. It Is maintained by many that
the former Is more attractive to the
Investor than the latter, as It pays
double the dividend rate and, through
ownership of the stock of the other. Is
In the enjoyment of the fruits of Its
prosperity. The more money the South
ern Pacific makes the greater the In
come of the Union Pacific. The con
troversy Is becoming quite Interesting.
Not long ago the English were most
pronounced bulls on Canadian Pacific,
while New York was more or less
luke-warm. Now that the stock has
been doing well In this market It Is
somewhat surprising to note that Lon
don is not In sympathy with the move
ment. .The stock Is held abroad In the
main, there being little of It In this
country, while the Canadians have
been letting It go of late. They do
not think as much of It os they did.
It Is said that It will, take many mil
lions to put It on a par with the first-
class roads of the United States In the
matter of track and equipment.
