than one hour and a half after he was
taken from a train and placed In a
cell In the city prison on Tuesday
night, Frank M. Thompson, aged forty-
five, dlvlelon superintendent of the
United States geological survey, sta
tioned at Mesa, Arts., committed suicide
by hanging himself with a belt to the
roof of his celL
Letters and papers and a ticket from
Chicago to Philadelphia Indicate that
Thompson was oh his way from At-lzo-
na to his home In-Philadelphia, where
he has a wife residing.

CAPTAIN DONOVAN DIES
AT HOME IN WADLEY.I

Wadtey, Ga., April 24.—Captain Dole I
Donovan, one of the best known citi
zens of Jefferson county, died yester-
day morning at 11 o'clock. He had |
been suffering several months of tu
berculosis. He was a son of the late |
William Donovan, the founder of Wad-
ley. Captain Donovan Is survived by I
his wife, who was Miss Ellen O'Con- I
ners, of Lancaster, Pa.; four children, I
two brothers, A. B. Donovan, of Wad- I
ley, and Hon. W. O. Donovan, of Ly- I
ons, and two slaters, Mrs. John S.
Owens and Mrs. Claude Shoemake, of
Atlanta. The funeral services will bo
conducted by Rev. J. E. Duren, pastor
of the Baptlet church.

Loganvtlle, Ga., April 24.—The win
try earn rain that set In Monday morn
ing qt 4 o'clock, continuing Into the
afternoon, put a quietus on farm opera
tions in till* section for a few days. Hut
for the rain the people would havp wit
nessed cotton planting by hundreds of
farmers in Walton and Gwtnnet. who
would have put In the bulk of the
crop Inside of u week or ten days. It
will now lie May 1 before the seed
goes in the ground.
The corn crop has about been plant
ed and has come up. but freezes and
cold rains and the bird* are greatly
injuring it.
The wheat prospect Is gloomy. It
Is now heading out on a short stalk.
Karly vegetables have been killed, ex
cept the hardy kind, and the fruit Is
only a quarter of a crop.
Grocery Store Robbed.
Gadsden. Ala., April 24.—The gro
cery store of J. C. Dyson, on Broad
street, was robbed for the second time
last night within a week. The, thieves
broke a gtas* in the front door and
gained entrance. A considerable quan
tity of provisions were carried off.
