Washington, Oa, April 25.—Wilkes
county la to hare a J 100,000 corpora
tion, the object ot which Is to build
a system of warehouses In this county
for the holding of Wilkes county's
production of cotton. The morement
was launched at Tuesday's meeting of
cotton growers, held here. The plan
has been Indorsed by practically every
progressive planter of the county. A
committee was appointed to confer
with the cotton growers of the neigh,
boring county of Lincoln, and If their
cooi>eratlon and support can be ob
tained In tbe enterprise the system of
■warehouses will Include both Lincoln
and Wilkes counties and each will
ehare the benefits.
Hon. El D. Smith, who Is known as
the "gatllng gun" of the Southern
Cotton Association, will come to this
county In the course of a few weeks to
help In tbo work of securing the sub
ecription to stock and get the new en

farmer, was called' to the door of his
home last night and shot through the
brain. He was conducting evening
prayer when called, and had hie Bible
In his band when ha went to the door.
Winchester Jordan and his brother,
Thomas, are charged with the shooting.
Bowen and Jordan had had trouble.

have no money with which to defray
their expenses. Several prominent citi
zens have agreed to contribute to the
fund necessary to give them the trip.

over to the veterans.
A trip similar to that contemplated In
June was given the veterans several
years ago when they were sent to
Louisville at tho expense ot their
friends In Atlanta.

wanted n cigar, but when he tried to
smoke he was made sick. Now he ab

Police Take Young Woman
on Suspicion, But

The peculiar actions of a young
woman, who gave her name as Mr*.
Ida Smith, of Edgewood, and suspicious
blood stains on her shirt waist, caused
her arrest shortly after midnight
of Tuesday as she stepped from the
last Incoming trolley car from the
water works.
The young woman was escorted to
the police station and detained in the
f f *J»«h* ward. -V.'ur an investigati *a
Wednesday morning by Policeman Hol
lis and Cowan, Mrs; Smith was ordered
released, the police being unable to ob
tain any evidence to warrant her being
held further.
The presence of a strange woman In
the vicinity of the water works was
reported at the police station earlier
in the night, but no action was taken,
aa sho whs outsida-of the city.
When the water works car reached
the city shortly after midnight, the
woman was arrested at the Instance
of the conductor, who informed a
policeman that he thought her conduct
should be investigated.
During the eaiiy part of the night,
Mrs. Smith’s little boy walked into the
police station and reported that he had
become lost from his mother. The boy
was at the station when his mother
was brought In.

Helena, Ga., April 25.—The large va
riety works, planing mill anil dry kiln
of the lumber manufacturing company
here were totally destroyed by tiro at 6
o’clock yesterday afternoon, entailing a
loin of at least 520,000.
The fire began In the planing room
nnd rapidly spread to the other build
ings. In ten minutes from tho first
outbreak ths intlre mill waa a mass of
■lames. But for the heroic efforts of
the firemen the entire west side of the
city would have been destroyed, to
gether with the Seaboard Air Line
freight depot and yards. Practically
no Insurance was carried on the plant.

WOMAN MAKES A PLEA f
FOR SUFFERING HORSE
Petersburg, Va., April 25.—John T.
Parham,'aged *5 years, a Confederate
veteran, who waa color guard for his
regiment In Pickett's famous charge at
Gettysburg, committed suicide by
shooting himself In the head with a
Colts revolver. He lingered two hours.
He had been despondent for some time

When the case of Daniel Hewitt,
negro, charged with cruelty to animals,
waa called Wednesday morning In po
lice court, the main witness to appear
against him was iltss May Cruder; a
wealthy New York philanthropist who
came to Atlanta aome time ago and re.

It developed that Miss Cruder had
noticed the negro In Piedmont avenue
driving a lame horse, and she proin)
stopped him and held him until
arrival of a policeman. 5tiss Cruder
asked that the horse be killed, but Re
corder Broyles held that he had no au
thority to do this. It being shown that
the affection of the leg gave the horse
no pain. Dr. Will Carnes, city veteri
narian, testified the horse has elephant-
Itls, an enlargement ot the leg, but said
the nnlmal suffered no pain. Unde? this
showing, the recorder dismissed the
case, warning the negro, however, not
to bring the horse Into the city again.
Since coining to Atlanta Miss Cruder
has taken an actlvfc Interest in local
charity work and Wednesday Informed
Dr. Carnes she was ready to aid the
Humane Society with money. Miss
Cruder Is a member of similar socie
ties In New York, France and Brus
sels. In Brussels she was the origina
tor of a movement that resulted in the
harnessing of dogs, used In hauling
milk. She has been around the world
three times and Is a woman of wide ex
perience.
