New York. April 21—Tbe opening of the
cotton market wae better than wao at flret
looked tor, opening prlcea being onlj 2®
S point# lower. The number of notices
wit considerably larger than had been
expected. The tenders amounted to about
Tf.000 baleo. There was good support on
the call for some of the largest bouses,
but later a* bear drive was made against
May and July, forcing them off to lower
level*. Late positions wore quiet, and not
much Inclined to share the drop In near by
positions.
The New York market closed steady, net
unchanged to 7 points higher than the clos
ing of Thursday.

Bullish Character on
the Opening.
Chicago, April 26.—Tho bullish feel
ing In wheat waa lntenalBad by tho re
ported taking of thirteen cargoes off
tho English coast and a lot of parcels.
New. on the whole wa. bullish and the
market was 1 0-802 cent, higher for
the day.
Beside, the higher cable, and tho
bullish reports on crop condition, from
abroad, were the taking of 35 load, for
export and a report from Argentina
that the offering, down there aro on the
decreoM, Duluth stock, decreased 1,-
300,000 bushel, for tttt . week, while
Minneapolis Increased 125,000 bushels.
The Modern Miller, in It. crop outlook,
will aay tomorrow: "Unfavorable
weather impair, the winter wheat pros
pects; the plant I. backward and warm
rains nro< needed to start seasonable
growth. Kroealng temperatures dam-
uged the crop in localities where the
plant had Joined. Tho Tennessee state
board of agriculture reports serious In
jury to wheat from frosts. Complaints
of green bug damage are less numerous
and none Is received out of the South
west."
