THE ATLANTA GEORGIAN AND NEWS. rnunsDAY, may 2, vm. OVER TREATMENT The death from lockjaw on Wednes day afternoon of Qrady Frailer, IS years of age, has borne followed by charges of neglect of duty and counter charges by Dr. Monroe Smith and Dr. A. Hargrove, a member of the house staff of the Grady hospital. Improper handling of the case at the hospital Is charged by Dr. Smith, while Dr. Hargrove asserts that he Is satis- fled that neglect of duty, after the case came Into the hands of Dr. Smith, brought on the attack of lockjaw. Grady Frasier was elevator boy at the Kimball House and on April 17 mashed the Ungers on one of his hands. He was taken to the hospital In a cnb and the wound treated and dressed by Dr. Hargrove, after which the patient left. Two days later Dr. Smith took charge of the case. One of the Angers was badly lacer ated and Dr. Smith says It should have been treated as an open wound. In stead, he says, the wound was prompt ^ ly sewed together. If the wound hal * been left open, he states, the conditions would have been more favorable and gangrene, which he found on taking the case, would probably not have set In. Dr. Hargrove denied emphatically thnt he neglected his duty. He declares that the wound was thoroughly cleansed with a preparation calculated to kill any germ or number of germs, and that It was given the best possible attention. He says the wound was closed, but that he considered this en tirely proper. At the time of the accident the boy's hand was dirty and greasy, but Dr. Smith eayi he considers the wound wns cleansed at the hospital aa thoroughly aa It could have been. The only objec tion to the treatment, he saya, was the closing of the wound.
