this morning, almost demolishing both
engines and badly Injuring two per
sons.
Th* Injured are:
Fireman R. L. Holt, of the switch
engine; cut In the back of th* head and
hip mashed.
Charles Hawkins, colored, fireman of
the local freight; bruised about th*
' r and left leg broken,
l* wreck occurred near Orants Mill,
Just east ot the city, and Is attributed
to the dense fog which prevailed at the
hour.

Smith went to the home of Jonae Rob
erta, near Savannah, yesterday and de
manded a drink of water. While he
was getting It Smith shot at him,
shot tearing, through the eld* of
neck. Tb* gun exploded, resulting In
tb* loss of Smiths arm. Both are
colored.

Birmingham. Ala, May 5.—Sensa
tional developments are expected at th*
preliminary hearing of W. L. Lovejoy,
an assistant warden at the convict
prison of the Tennesee* Coal, Iron and
Railroad Company, who h*> been ar
rested on a warrant charging him with
beating a convict to such an extent
that death resulted. Th* trial I* sched
uled to come up tomorrow before Judge
I. H. Benners, of the Inferior criminal
court, before whom the warrant charg
ing Lovejoy with murder waa awon
but by relatives ot Chsrlta. alias “Pig,'
Ford, the dead convict, who was sent
to the mines for ten days and cost
for vagrancy. Th* cost amounted to
104 days, making a total of 114 days
which the negro waa sentenced to
serve. Relatives heard that be had
been arrested end paid tbe tin*. When
they reached th* mine with th* release
order they found the negro Ford In an
unconscious condition In th* prison
hospital.
