The Bijou theater will offer next week what promises to be the most novel entertainment of the season and one that will certainly bring capacity audiences to the popular theater. The attraction Is the Great l^fayette and ' his company. In three productions. The Birmingham Age-Herald said of the performance: "Lafayette, who began n week's en gagement at the Bijou theater last night, proved to be an entertainer of wonderful versatility. He gave a per formance that was more elaborate and more varied, than perhaps any.other of Its kind ever seen at n local play house The first part of his performance consists of a number of startling Il lusions In which be became first one person and then another with sur prising cose. The number of costumes alone worn In this act and the rapidity with which they were changed, to say nothing of wigs, false beards and other ports of a make-up that were used, must have entailed strenuous work behind the scenes. Lafayette would be draping tffe figure of a man or woman, and In the twinkling of an eye he would become that figure himself. The audience was only disillusioned when ho took off his make-up and re vealed Ills fare. "The second part of '.he performance was rendered enjoyable by music from an excellent brass band, which fur nished a concert that was concluded by a number of Impersonations of well known composers by Lafayette. The act was brought to a close by another ono of Lafayette’s tricks that mystified everybody until explained. "The third part was devoted to a rather elaborate pantomime, depleting the love of an Indian chieftain for a white girl and her capture. The girl was thrust Into a lion's den, where Mojeste was roaring. Suddenly, the lion seemed to leap upon her and again Lafayette disclosed his Identity by re moving his false head. The real lion, a magnificent brute, by the way, had In the meantime disappeared.” May-June Festival. Occupying an It Uo.*n the ib.ef point of Sentimentalism vs. Justice (Copyright, 1977, by Amerkmu Journal Kxfl miner.) The miscarriage of justice through sen Umeotalliin has reached an alarming stage In this country. The i*rfl*tulty of t|>«* majesty of the law demand* a.halt In the methods of trying criminals.' Within the past few years wen and worn en have perpetrated the most atrocious crimes In vm-h public places nnd.iuuuuer that no possible doubt exists ns to the identity or guilt of the attempted or suc cessful murderers. Immediately after these offenders ognlnst society and the law make a pica for clemency on the ground that they havo goffered Intolerable cruelties at'the hands of unfaithful-husband, wife or erstwhile friend. Companions In wrongdoing become Jesloas of each other, or weary of the tyranny that their relations Inflict, and seek vengeance or relief through channels that are em ployed by assassins. Unfortunately, In all too many instances sentimentalism aud mis- guided sympathy come In such overwhelm ing torrents as to completely^ dofeflt the ends of Justice and Nt at liberty the per petrator of the. dastardly deed. • It would not be claiming too morn to say that almost without exception the re cipients of such unmerited clemency return to their old habftg and vicious Jlrcs, con tinuing to exorcise an evil Influence over the weak and youth of tne land. One admits that the better element of society Is often shocked at the revelations. BY MRS. JOHN A. Fawcett Sleek Company, which will begin a summer season at the Grand on May'27, when “The Henrietta" will be the attrac tion. Since the announcement by the man agement several week* ago- that this organisation, whfch has long been Identified with Washington and Bal timore, would bo In Atlanta for the Bummer, the Interest In theatricals has revived. The personnel of the company will be definitely announced next week, when Mr. Fawcett will complete the cast. At present It Is expected that the leading woman will - bo either Miss Grape Kimball, a strong favorite In Atlanta and throughout the>South, or Miss Percy Haswell, who has long held the stellar rote of leading lady wltri this organisation. Mis* Kimball Is an emotional actress, and Is superb In the plays of tho nature of “East Lynne," “Camille” and “Leah Kleachna,” while Miss Haswell has a sympathetic style which shows her to the greatest pos sible advantage In these delightfully dainty society roles, which are to bo found In “A Bachelor's Romance,” "Tho Professor's Love Story” and the like. This company is now en tour and tho press notices Indicate that the or ganization has been kept up to Its high standard of perfection. It has long been the hobby of Mr. Fawcett to mount Jils productions, be they for a wqjek In the summer or a month In the winter, on the most exact scale. It Is with this aim In view that he will send to Atlanta next week a corps of scene painters who will work Jn the flies of the' Grand for ten days In preparing scenery for the- use of the stock company. And as Mr. Fawcett Insists on hav ing the details of hfs stage settings to harmonise with Ihe story of hfs play, so does he Insist that the characters shall dress their parts. The fact that the samo company presents a dozen different plavs during a summer's'run docs not Indicate for him that a dozen different characters can be shown without a change of dress.
