AIRSHIP RACES
BY CHICAGO CLUB
. Lascelles, Dr. Arnold Kings
ley. Sydney Asquith, Beresford Hope,
Lord Walter S. Beresford—were some
of the many aliases he masqueraded
under, and coupled with a dashing ap
pearance and a polished and refined
exterior, he succeeded In duping men
and women, high up on the social lad
der, to the tune of many thousands.
He Comes to Georgia.
From the sunny cotton fields of
Georgia to the North; all over the
United States, In fact, men and wom

to them by the suave •lord,” and for
which he received cash—that cash for
which his soul craved; for which he
lied and deceived and stole.

son of an English gamekeeper, but
on landing In New York, posed as
nephew of the celebrated English ad
miral, giving his own name as Lord
Beresford. He borrowed money right
and left and Anally married the daugh
ter of a wealthy tobacco merchant.
Miss Maud Llttenthal. Her English
“lord” was exposed and departed for
regions unknown. She secured a di
vorce.
From New York he went to Rome,
Ga., where he was Jailed for swindling
merchants out of large sums. A par
don was obtained and he again disap
peared.

He pretends to fall In love with Miss
Pearl Shale, of Clarence. Mo., a beau

College of Lexington. She Is an heiress
to a large fortune, which attracts the
avaricious eye of the “nobleman.".

The bogus doctor Is pinioned beneath

and holds his head above water until
help arrives.
The doctor Is considered fatally lm
Jured, and while seemingly on his
deathbed, he tells Miss Shale of his
lova and bsssschas her to marry him
that she nmy Inherit his vast fortune.
She consents, and the ceremony Is per
formed, after'which he recovers at a
marvelous rate and is soon pronounced
out of danger.
He secures offices In a Ano ofllco
building, and Is soon afterward sued
by the owner of the horses for dam
ages. A Jury decides ths coso against
him and he Is called upon to settle, but
confesses his Inability to pay and again
disappears.
Abandons His Bride.
This time he leaves a young wife
and mother: a baby girl had been born
to them' Just before he disappeared,
and the realisation that she had been
duped comes with awful force upon
the beautiful girl victim of the swin

Salt Lake City, Utah, was the next
place visited by the bogus “lord," who
came to that place armed with a letter
of credit from the "Brttlsh-Amerloan
Securities, London, Limited," which
stated that the bearer was good for
<500,000.
The unsuspecting Mormons accepted
that bait eagerly, and outdid each other
In showering favors upon their distin
guished visitor. They were Aeeced out
of large sums of money, and eventually
awoke to the fact that they, also, were
dupes. Again the disapeparanco act
was accomplished with great success.
The next heard from "the man of
many names" was the report of his
death In Asheville.
Now. In Clarence. Mo, a sweet-faced
girl-mother recaHa the man she trusted
and smiles sadly to see his Image re-
