There la aomethlng, Inspiring and keenly Interesting about an enthuel aatlc and well conducted auction sale of real eatate. In contraat to the so ber, uerloua, expectant look on the up turned faces of the men, there la a fluttering of ribbons and the waving of plumes, revealing the . presence of the opposite sex, dressed as for a holiday occasion. Even the little ones are brought out to enjoy the fresh air, sun shine nnd green trees. The munager Issues a call for order, makes his little statement, and the auctioneer takes hla stand, shouting forth the bids as made by the purchas er. Here and thero a timid bidder, whether a man or a woman, lifts a Anger, or nods the head, each nod and each uplifted Anger Indicating a will ingness to swap the cash for real es tate. The timid bidder and the bold trader each nerves himself to outreach the other, until Anally the lot Is knock ed down, and the purchaser has made his trade. The demand for real estate, the prof. Its that have been made and are being made, lend seat and acute Interest to these affairs, both the man of wealth and the cltlxen of moderate means ex pressing the limit of his ability and willingness to buy as Axed by the amount of his bid. One of the most Interesting sales of the season was that of Tuesday In fa mous old West End, the property sold being that held for so many years by the Williams estate, of Richmond, Va. In February, 1906, this property was bought by a syndicate of several gen tlemen. Graders, house-movers, sew er contractors and plumbers were put to work. Approximately 36,990 waa spent In grading, moving nnd reno vating old houses, and In putting In sewers In alleys, running water pipes, gas pipes, etc. Soon they had one of the most undesirable pieces of proper ty In all West End transformed Into desirable building lots. Dozens of houses have been built nn and across the street from this prop erty, os the result of these Improve ments. Messrs. S. R. Turman & Co. had charge of the development of the TROOPS DIVIDED FDR SHI BATTLE Artillery and Cavalry as Well as Infantry To Be Engaged. Preparations for the sham battle at Piedmont park next Saturday afternoon ore being pushed rapidly to completion and Captain Wilson, who has charge of tho plan of attack and defense, has almost completed the necessary ar rangements. Tuesday afternoon, In company with the other members of hla committee, Captain Wilson went to Piedmont park and looked over the scene of the pro posed battle, with n view to Andlng out what Is the best disposition to be made of the forces that will be engaged. It has been decided that the troops will be divided Into two armies, one occupying tho north side of the park and the other the south side. Colonel Anderson, of the Fifth regiment, will be in command of one body and Colonel Harris will direct the movements of the other. On the hill overlooking Pied mont park proper the artillery, consist ing of four cannon, will bo masked. It will be supported by eight companies of Infantry and two troops of cavalry. This force will be known as the north side. The south side will be composed of the machine gun battery, supported by two troops of cavalry and twelve or fourteen companlea of Infontry. The south side will begin the attack and will charge the forces entrenched on the hill. As arranged by the commit tee, the attack and defense will present a 'most Inspiring spectacle and will have the aspect of genuine, bona Ade warfare. property and of the auction sale of It on Tuesday.
