discouraging, in view of the'poor crop

HAYWARD, VICK A CLARK’S
DAILY COTTON LETTER
New Orleans, May 29.—Weather conditions
continue unfavorable In the greater portion
of the belt. Cold weather prevailed In the
northern half and extensive rains occurred
in the western and central states. More
rain is Indicated for the central and west
ern belt, finch conditions ami outlook
caused systematic bear pressure to be bus-
pended, and tbe markets, which duriug the
K st few days had been held down against
dination. rebounded sharply. Liverpool
recovered the early loss sod gained 7 points
over yesterday on new crops. Opening
trades hern were at an advance of 13 to &
points, sod though there was cousiderabta
realising and selling by New York, the im
provement was maintained and the upward
tendency remained unchecked. The South
western Cotton Buyers’ Association gives
the condition for Texas as 66.2. mnl 1 per
cent Increase in acreage. The New York

New York Commercial; Further advances,
have been named on cotton yarns within
the past few days and sellers are bolding
out firmly for these new prices on all de-
Ivsrles. On long distant deliveries, running
nlo next year, cotton yarn agents are even
firmer In their price Ideas than la usually
the case for long distant contracts. The

resulted In buyers being cautious over the
booking of orders for deliver/ well on lu
the end of tbe year nnd early next year.
They are demanding atlff prices for deliv
eries of this sort and are getting them In
the majority of cases.
For uear-by and spot shipment prices ore
also stiff and the market today Is by no
means a buyers’ market, borne agents in
this market are holding their yarns at
what ere termed prohibitive prices and re-

Commercial makes the acreage for tbe belt
4 per cent lesa than last year.
Tbe absence of lasting improvement In
coudltlona concerning the now crop Is
strengthening bullish confidence from day
to day, and the tenor of the numerous In
quiries from all parts of Europe show that
there Is deep concern abroad about the sup
ply question for next season. The bureau
report on Juno 4 therefor# may have con
siderable effect on the markets. Official
records show over 20 points In the western
belt with 1H Inches of rainfall during the
past 24 hours. Tbe rain area la moving
eastward Into the central belt nud contin
ued reports of rain are now arriving from
the delta. Futures are firm nnd advancing.
New York, May 29.—J. 8. Uacbe A Co.:
Liverpool took a dr#p In tho early seaslou
this morning. The near forces evidently
brought about selling on tho other side to
break the New York market, but tbelr ef
forts came to naght, for at our opening
there waa a peralsteut demand due to the
continued rains aud fear that weather con
ditions would be even worse over the holi
day. Shorts were responsible for the enrly
advance aud bull manipulation did the rest.
Another bull argument waa the New York
Commercial report showing a decrease In
acreage of 4 per cent under last year's.
Private advices state even the third plant
ing does not show any Improvement, nud
coudltlona continue deplorably bullish. We
believe prices are low, and woubl udvise
buying today for-a sharp advance.

New York, May 29.—J. S. Bacbe & Co.;
Loudon market strong, *4 to 174 higher.
Settlement may bring some more failures,
but nothing of any consequence expected.
Doubtful whether more gold will go from
here this week. The raid at end of day
was confined to a few stocks. Amalgamated
was the chief sufferer. The attack had
been advertised In the enrly morning nnd
was made lu order to cover stocks else
where.
The break In wheat was a factor and
helped tbo market considerably. Look for a
good recovery In. the list today.
Town Topics: While there will doubtless
be some covering today over the holiday,
we see nothing lu the market situation that
would causo us to think there Is anything,
to be gained by buylug nt this time. From
au investment standpoint, stocks are un
doubtedly cheap, but In our opinion they
may be bought still cheaper. On any severe
breaks, but not otherwise, we would ad
vise buying for turn* th© Hill and nar-
rlman stocks, St Paul, Atchison, Pennsyl.
vanla, Baltimore and Ohio, Reading, Louis
ville and Nashville and Atlantic Coast
Line.
Buy cotton on weak spots for moderate
profits.
On further sharp reactions, wheat may
be bought for a turn.

with such temperaments, more smenabIe*to
conservative advices. This development Is
now said to be taking place. Amalgamated
may go a little lower, but should be bought
confidently around 80, where good support
begins. Anaconda mar sympathize. Smelt
ing supported around 112 now. St. Paul

Central 109, Northern Pacific 120, Reading
96, Southern Pacific 72, Union Pacific 132,
United 8tates Steel 31. Of course, if li
quidation overwhelms tbe reduced level,
professionals will again attack vigorously.
Otherwise, expect a recovery!
Professional selling will • be found for
short account on rallies In Brooklyn Rapid
Transit, Canadian Pacific, Erie. Reading
and Smelting in particular. Individual In
vestment Is found In St. Paul. Amalgamat
ed, Pennsylvania and Atchison.

8HARP PRACTICE EVIDENT
IN TUESDAY’S MARKET.
New Orleans.‘May 29.—Tho Times Demo
crat says: "There was some evidence of
sharp practice’ in yesterday’s cotton market.
A fow operators seemed to desire a decline
either for the purpose ©f covering short in
terests or to enable them to get In again
fit a lower figure. Any way, some rery
queer telegrams came from New York,
which nt time* scared off support. Tho
tenor of the government's weekly crop
weather bulletin did not harmonize with
the flood of private advices received during
the past few days, and while the talent
strenuously maintained the correctne* of
low condition report views, there was a
well-defined respect for cautious operations
pending the- receipt of the bureau report
next week. Under the law the weather
man cau not report the effect of the ele
ments on the growing crops, while tbe pri
vate reporter may. Low temperatures la
some sections of the belt caused comment,
but little fresh buying power. Local spot
men reported some activity. On the whole
there was little'in the* market to inspire
a spread of bearish views In so fair os sup
ply aud demand problems nro concerned,
other than a’qulto logical Improvement lu
the bad crop altudtloo with more seasona
ble weather in some sections.'’—Hayward,
