Rauers. Another party spending the
week at Mr. Stoddard's country home,
on Danfusklo Island, Is composed of
Mr. and Mre. Robert Bllllngton, Miss
Barrow sail Miss Thomas. At Bluff-
ton, Mrs. T. V. Walker Is entertain
ing Miss Claudia McAlpln and Miss
Minnie Mackall. Parties to Captain
Mantgault's famous rose gardens
across the river have also formed many
pleasant outings during the past fen
weeks.
Mrs. Ralph Elliott of Los Angeles,
Cal., formerly of Savannah, has an
nounced the engagement of her daugh
ter. Harriet King, to Mr. John Brown-
low van Ess. of Chicago, the wedding
to be a quiet event of November 14.
Miss Elliott has spent most of her life
here and Is very closely Identified with
the social life of the city.
The Mary Maclean Circle of King's
Daughters, whose membership Includes
a number of society's most prominent
young women, gave a very attractive
garden fete on Tuesday afternoon In
the court yard of the DeSoto Hotel.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin W. Cubbedge

CHATTANOOGA.
The first part of this week was gay
for Chattanooga society, but gloom
was cast over the last part by the
tragic death of Sirs. W. J. Bass, the
popular matron who was killed In s
runaway accident Thursday. A num
ber of large affairs were postponed in-
definitely on account of the accident.
Sirs. Bass was prominent In the society
circles of both Chattanooga and Nash
ville. She was the daughter of Dr. and
Sirs. J. W. Madden, prominent resi
dents of Nashville.
General A. P. Stewart Chapter,
Daughters of the Confederacy, held Its
annual meeting Monday. Officers were
elected as follows: President, Mrs. C.
A. Lyerly; first vice president, Sirs. W.
P. SlcClatchey; second vice president,
Sirs. SI. E. Robinson; recording secre
tary, Mrs. Hugh Embrey; correspond
ing secretary, Sirs. T. P. McFarland;
treasurer, Mrs. G. SI. Smsrtt; regis

Miss Frances Henderson gave a din

bride's mother, on Slltchell avenue. The
ceremony was performed by Dr. A. B.
Stansell, pastor of the St. James Meth
odist church.

luncheon Wednesday at her home. In
the Elizabeth, In honor of Sllss Kath
erine Kaufman, of New Orleans.
The Troop B society vaudeville which
was scheduled for tost night and which
was to have been the event of the Bed-
son In the way of amateur theatricals
was called oft on account of the death
of Sirs. W. J. Bass. It may be given
next week. Among those who have re
hearsed for the vaudeville are nearly a
half hundred well-known girls and
young men.
Oscar Beagle, a Chattanooga boy,
whose baritone voice Is bringing him
fame. Is to appear soon In a company
of Paris notables which will revive
•'The Barber of Seville." Madame Patti
Is to take the role of Roslna.
