Washington, June (.—One hundred
Confederate veteran* at or mod the
white houee yesterday. They came
bearing their battle-torn flags, their
drume and their muaketa, and were
headed by Congressman John Wesley
Gaines, of Tennessee.
Before entering the white house they
hung their sabers on the fence anil
stacked their guns on the sidewalk.
At 1:10 o'clock. Immediately after the
cabinet adjourned, they were received
with the greatest cordiality by the
president. He shook hands heartily
with all that had hands to shake, and
paid special attention to those whose
battle scars singled them out from the
crowd.

ferred from the state farm to tho comp

ing mill of tha lumbar company. When
(he sentence waa poised upon Strong,
hu wop taken to the state prison farm
at Mllledgcvllle, whero It was thought
he would he kept until (he aspiration
of his sentence, hut the prison cnmmls.

ment .made of Judge A. L. Ml|ler for
mayor has created no end of Interest,
evd since the announcement there has
been a great deal of discussion oa to
the outcome of the rare.
In many quarters the announcement
waa rather unexpected, as there were
many of the opinion that Judge Miller
would not be In the race this year, and
that an agreement had been mode by
which the Miller forces were to name
the aldermanle board and support Mr.
Smith for mayor.
The line-up la already beginning, and
everywhere In the streets talk of the
coming race can be heard.
Since the announcement both Mayor
Smith and Judge Miller have received
many assurances of support, and It-
looks like the race la going to be as
warm, If not warmer, than the one of
two years ago.

TWO COLLEGES SUE
Through their attorney, John C. Hart,
the trustees of the University of Geor
gia and the Georgia Normal and In
dustrial College have filed'a bill against
the Aetna Indemnity Company to re.
cover (7,(44.87, alleged (o be due as a
guarantee for the fulfillment of a con
tract entered Into between tbe trustees
and the Atlanta Fireproofing Company.
The petitioners allege that In March,
1906, a contract was made with the
Fireproofing Compuny for the erection
of a building on the grounds of the
Oeorgla Normal and Industrial College
at Mltledgevllle, and that the Indemnity
Company went on the bond of the lat
ter for the faithful performance of the
work. It Is further alleged that before
the work was completed the Atlanta
Fireproofing Company became Insolvent
and that the Aetna Indemnity Company
therefore became responsible, but has
refused to fulfill Its contract.
