MADAME NORDIOA’8 PROJECT.
Lillian Nordics, Just before sho sailed
tor Europe, said she has perfected
plans for an American Bayreuth, mod
eled on the plan of the temple of Was-
nerian music in Bavaria. Her project
will combine the features of the great
Wagner theater In Bayreuth with a
school of operatic instruction, where
coming American opera singers may
be taught under the guidance of the
best that the new world affords.
Mme, Nordica's theater will probably
be known as the Lillian Nordica Fes-
tlval House, and will be located on a
site ten miles north of Ossining, be
tween the Croton reservoir and the
river. There are twenty acres In all.
They have been bought by the singer
for 1100,000. The tract consists of the
old Van Cortlnndt estato located at
Harman, near Croton Landing. It will
be accessible both by water and by
rail, being In the electrical zone, so-
called, of the New York Central. It
lies high above the river and from It
there will be obtainable a view of Hie
country for forty miles about. TV
slope Is naturally favorable for such
sn undertaking and the theater build
ing. with a seating capacity of 1,000,
will be a replica of the original abroad.
In fact, one of the reasons why Mme.
Nordica has gone abroad Is to* obtain
the original plans for the Bayreuth
Festival Theater, which will be given
over to the New York architects and
builders on her return. The theater will
be so constructed that In clear weather
the roof may be thrown back and the
performances may be given virtually
In the open air. About It there will bo
a group of buildings that will harmon
ize. The great singer's own home is not
far away, at Ardsley-on-the-Hudson.
Other reasons why Mme. Nordica has
gone abroad Is to get any suggestions
that Frau Costma Wagner may give,
and to bring-back the director of the
Munich Bayreuth to act as consulting
director.
The project will* require a vast
amount of capital. The J100,000 already
expended for the land will be but a
small Item, but already a sufficient
number ot men of means have been
Interested In It to free those at the head
of any worry on the money score.
Mme. Nordica plans to have a board of
women managers, behind whom there
will be directors for the financial end
of the undertaking. It Is hoped that
the projsct will be brought to Its com
pitted stage by the summer of 1909.
The first year of the. theater will be
’ given over to Wagnerian opera exclu
sively. After that there will be operas,
oratorios and symphonies from May to'
October,' with nil the great artists of
tbs world taking part. Mme. Nordica
will herself appear In many of her fa
vorite roles, but thereafter there will be
an Intermixture of the other schools of
opera, for the reason, among others,
that the educational features ot the
Institutes are to be made as compre
tensive as possible.
