Special to The Georgian. Montgomery, Ala., Juno 29.—In an exclusive story The Dally States de clares It has authentic grounds for the statement that the Pennsylvania rail road Is making a mighty effort to gain control of the Louisville and Nashville railroad, the Atlantic Coast Line, the Central of Georgia and several other Southern lines, for the handling of the Panama canal trade. The newspaper says: “The confirmed sale of the Central of Georgia railroad to Thorne and Perry, revealed the faot that the Pennsylvania railroad and several other smaller ones are endeavoring to extend their hold ings to the utmost Southern points for the purpose of being prepared to meet the Increased traffic caused by the com pletion of the Panama canal. “Tt Is a fact that the Pennsylvania line has had Its agents through the South for some time past Investigating the values of the railroad properties here, which It hopes to soon acquire,’ said a railroad man this morning, who Is In close touch with railroad condU tlons In . the South. 'A party of J. P. Morgan's representatives traveled through Montgomery a few days ago, Incognito, on a tour of secret Investi gation, looking up the roads which the Pennsylvania desires to procure, that It may crowd out other competition in securing the Panama trade. "I might even state that the. The report is persistent, and the statement is made on advice which Is deemed authoritative. The most prom inent whisky men in Atlanta, It lu known, have apparently abandoned all efforts to defeat the bill, and one prominent wholesale man is not even in the city. Rumor has it that he is making ar rangements for the shipping of whisky into Atlanta. Potteries Close Down. In this connection, word comes from Augusta that two of the biggest pot teries in the state, whose work consists almost exclusively In the manufacture of Jugs, shut down when the legislature convened and tho management ascer< talncd the sentiment of both houses of the assembly. Retail whisky dealers are refusing to buy any more stock, elthor in Atlanta or other Georgia cities, pending the ad- tlon of the legislature. With the pas sage of the prohibition bill, it Is be* lieved thero will be a general exodus df whisky men from Atlanta, Macon, Au gusta, Savannah and other Georgia cities to the large cities of neighboring states. If the bill is passed, It is probable that plants erected solely for the shipment of whisky Into Georgia will be ready for work when the law goes Into effect. The prohibitionists, of course, will Im mediately make a fight on this, and the shippers will fall back on the Interstate commerce commission. Randolph Rose Talks. R. M. Rose, of the R. M. Rose & Co., was seen by a representative of The Georgian Saturday morning relative to the reports that the fight had been abandoned and that distillers, whole salers and retailers were preparing to year the Central .of Georgia, the At lantic Coast Line and the Louisville and Nashville roads would all he equipped with cars upon which appears tl»e name "The Greater Pennsylvania System.” That road will be In absolute control of the greater portion of the traffic which will come through the Panama canal.’ ” go to neighboring cities in order to establish plants to ship from. “As far as I am concerned/' statod Mr. Rose, “I have never made any fight If the people want state prohibition, let them have it. The legislature, I be lieve, is composed of fair men and I am willing to abide by what they say. “If I lived In a small town, I am frank to say I would probably be a prohibitionist. But In a town of mope than 25,000 population, I don’t think It can be enforced, and I don’t believe in having laws that won’t be enforced. We have too many dead letters on the stntute books now. Rose Will Stay. “I believe In strict regulation of the hlsky business—stricter than we have now. I believe In high licenses. If the legislature passes <the prohibi tion bill, I think 1 shall stay in Atlan ta. I like Atlanta and I like the peoplo here, and I will sell something else. *1 don't believe the law can be en forced, and • It would only be a picnic for the whisky men In Anniston. Chat tanooga, ItlrniinghHin and other cities In nearby states who would sell their whisky here anil would not have to pay any licenses. I suppose a number of whisky men here would move tc these cities and begin shipping. “Frankly, I do not think the legisla ture will pass the bill, but If It 1: passed, put me down for what the peo It owns a fine dairy from winch is supplied the milk, cream and butter for the guests.
