Censure Is Handed to Judge
For Ruling Evi
dence Out.
Richmond, Va., Juljr J.—The press
of the etate. almost without exception,
condemns the action of the Halifax
county jury for finding In favor of
Judge William O. Loving, of Nelson
county, who killed Theodore I. Estes.
The papers of the commonwealth are
also bitter In their excoriation of Judge
William R. Barksdale, who presided at
the trial, for his decision ruling out
the testimony offered by the Estes
family tending to show that no assault
had been committed and attacking to
some extent the character of Mias Lov
ing.
ENGINEER DE
PULLED
HER FAST
Brought Milloinaires’ Spe
cial Jumping Over the
Bumps.
From Greenville to Atlanta by rail
la 160 mites, and Ben Dewberry, one of
the best known and most trustworthy
engineers on the Southern railway,
whirled the Edward Buchanan special
over the distance In exactly three
hours.
For nearly twenty-live years Ben
Dewberry has pulled passenger trains
over the Southern between Atlanta and
points north. His record Is probably
unequalled by any locomotive engineer
with a similar service In the country.
In all these years of pulling fast trains
Engineer Dewberry has never had a
serious accident A few minor mis
haps sum up his career.
When the Buchanan special reached
Greenville, It waa turned over to En
gineer Dewberry. Orders had been Is
sued for everything to give the Geor
gia millionaire's train the right of way,
and with a dear track assured the
great locomotive raced toward the
Georgia metropolis.
At Nororoas Mr. Buohanan's own
special car was set off, and a box of
fine cigars came to Engineer Dewberry
with the compliments of Mr. Buchanan.
When the Terminal Station was reach
ed, with the rest of the party, a well-
groomed gentleman came down to the
engine and slipped a crisp new 25 bill
Into the hand of the engineer.
