Summer weather has come upon us
at last and society has contented Itseli
with riding and driving in the always
beautiful scenery and delightful air.
Very few large entertainments have
been noted.
Mr. and Mrs. Tenche Coxe enter
tained Informally In honor of Mr. and
Mrs. Duncan Cameron Waddell, at
their beautiful home overlooking the
French Broad river. The afTalr was
al fresdft, supper being served on the
lawn. About fifty guests were pres
ent.
On Wednesday evening Miss Mar
guerite Wadsworth entertained with
cards at the home of her uncle, Mr.
Eugene Rankin, on Merrlmon avenue.
The game played was “set-back,”
which is gaining in popularity for card
parties, as it is liked by both men
and women. The verandas of Mr.
Rankin’s home was used to seat the
players. They had been gaily decorated
with potted plants nnd a profusion of
Chinese lanterns. Supper was served
al fresco, the perfect night making It
desirable to stay out of doors during
the entire evening. The prizes were a
gold veil pin for the girls and a stick
pin for the men. The young hostess
was assisted by Mrs. Patrick Branch
and Mrs. Arthur Rnnkin.
Miss Alice Devenlsh entertained the
Five Hundred Club at her home on.
Chestnut street on Thursday evening.
Her guest list included only members
of the club and a few substitutes in
place of those who could not attend.
The rooms were beautifully decorated
eet peas and nasturtiums. The
ladles’ prize was a beautiful hand-
painted cake plate; to the successful
man was awarded a stein of generous
proportions. ^
One of the small but exceedingly
pretty affairs of the week was the
luncheon given at the Woman’s Ex-

Miss Lizzie Bernard, whose summer
home is at Arden, was hostess for the
Monday Bridge Club, the members go
ing out on the early morning train and
returning to town on the late afternoon

extended trip to New York and other
Eastern point?. Mr. and Mrs. Roebling
were present at the celebration of the
seventieth birthday of Mr. Roebling’s
father, Mr. Washington Roebling, of

the city from a visit to Atlanta.

city to spend the summer from Atlanta.
