Late London prices show betterment from
earlier prices. Northern Pacific up h full
point. Union Pacific off 4, Beading un
changed. The balance of the market shows
general advance.
Northern Pacific strong on persistent ru
mors of a niflon cutting. Tile market was
a surpHse to the street yesterday, aud
from u stock market viewpoint ImUcatedra
much stronger position In regard to nnniey
matters than appears on tho surface. The
market will probably continue to advance
today with the Hill stocks as leader*.
The government's proceeding against the
coal combine may restrict ti-adlug lu the
coal stocks.
Crop reports are now coming strongly In
regard to hettermeut and this In Itself
should exert considerable Influence ou
prices. Barring any unfavorable develop
ments, s strong market Is expected today.
Town Topics: Tho short Interest seems
pretty thoroughly eliminated, and it Is dif
ficult to see how the element back of the
nresqpt bullish demonstration will be aide
to advance tho market ium*h further nt the
moment. There la a good deal of talk
about the Burlington deal, but tills will
hardly oventuate at a time when the money
market Ift so Illy prepared to absorb new
Issues of securities. In any ovent, It Is hard
to see how^any general hull argument can
bo carved from tne fact that Northern Pa
cific will sooner or lator make a distribu
tion representative of ,ts equity In the Bur
llnjrton system, which ivtry oue knows Is
quite valuable. On the other hand, the
market must contend with tho weakness lu
copper nietiJ and the spreading belief that
copper, ivmi and other metals will he seek
ing lournr levels before long. These develop
ments mark the progress «f the trade re
lation that has set In. and with money
