Bht eo far nobody has been found J Georgia who refuses to receive the tnoaey. After the decision In the lumber rate '“•. which compels the railroads to nnind all money collected by reason of the Increased rates to points north of the Ohio river, arrangements were made by those entitled to the money to have It collected. Claims to the extent of nearly a mil lion dollars are said to have been placed In the hands of Ellis, Wlmblah & Ellin ot Atlanta, for collection. But none there are so far around these parts. who will not take the money. It Is argued by Mr. Fleber, who Is one of the firm of Fleber A Holmes, that after he had to pay an Increased freight rate, he raised the price of his lumber so that It was the consumer who paid the bill. For thaf reason he says he Is not out anything and doesn't want tho money. He has Just notified the Southern railroad to this effect and announcement of his posi tion has been mode. He was request ed by the road's officials to make out his claim, and he declined and gave his reasons. It Is believed that there will be as many as three claimants for some of the money, but It will go to those who had directly to pay the increased rate. If the mills shipped lumber F. O. THE COLUMBUS LABORATORIES, COMMERCIAL FOOD AND MEDICAL ANALYSIS, 103 STATE STREET. CHICAGO, April 15, 1907. Coca-Cola Company, 1222-1228 Wabash Avenue, Chicago. Gentlemen: We beg leave to report to you the result of analysis of Coca-Cola. We purchased in the open market an original package of one gallon of Coca- CoIb. The contents of this jug were submitted to a very careful and ‘exhaustive analysis for cocoinc and alcohol, and we failed to find any trace of either. Caffeine was found to the extent of .2 of 1 per cent. The amount of caffeine contained In one ounce c< Coca-Cola used for making one glass of the prepared drink is less than one iwu that is contained in a cup of coffee of the average strength. Ver, respectfully submitted, THE COLUMBUS LABORATORIES, Per J, A. Wi9oner. ProfeiBor A. J. Ghost of Lochrain Castle Jl Thrilling Novel of Love, Intrigue, Tragedy and the Mystery 0} a Famous ‘Diamond W. H. Taylor, of Richmond, State Chem- lit of Virginia, Bays: "I made a chemical analysis of a sam ple of Coca-Cola syrup. The analysis wa« mads sxpressly to ascertain if the syrup contains cocaine, and after a painstaking search I hart not found any indication of it.' 1 Or. Louis Schaefer, President of the Schaefer Alkaloid Works, Maywood, N. J., a chemist of world-wide reputation, said: “I made a thorough analysts of Coca- Cola syrnp, using tbs best knowledge of my long experience In the ohemistry of Alkaloids. I found the samplo contained a small percentage of caffeine. I could not Isolate other Alkaloids. I especially directed my efforts to the doctectlon of cocaine. Not a trsco could be found. 1 ' W. B. Burney, of the Chemical Depart ment of the South Carolina College, of Columbia, S. C., says: "I bought five gollons of Coca-Cola eyrup in tho open market and eubjootcl the some to careful analysis. The ox- trsctlone of the eyrup wero repentod until the alkaloids wore entirely removed, nuj the crystalline substance concentrated nnd tested. Tho active constituent of Coca-Cola i.rrup proved to be caffeine an.l In quantities seemingly loss than in a cup of good coffee or tea.’* Jno. M. McCandlest, Btato Chemist ot Georgia, said: “I have purehaied In tho open market samples of Coon-Cola Syrnp and subjected samo to chemical analysis. I find therein no trace of the alkaloid cocaine, for which I made special search, and nothing of a nature any more injurious than would bo derived frinn an otdlnary cup at tea or coffee.” These and many other chemists agree that Coca-Cola is absolutely harmless. It is not only harmless, but is genuinely good to the taste and an aid to digestion. * By MRS. C. N. WILLIAMSON, Author'of “The Lightning Conductor,*’ Etc., Eta They were to meet there becauee It was a convenient place for the client, who could come and go by means of an underground passage which led away to the ruin of a still older castle built by the Lochralns, and destroyed by fire before the newer one was begun. Annette wae summoned there to dress nnd bind the wound, and In the process much blood had flowed before It could be staunched. Trowbridge had not learned then that the room below was newly occupied by the little type writer who had Just arrived; but aft erward. when she found out that' the room was In use, he had arranged for all necessary meetings to be held else where. When the first attempt on Captain Oxford's life had failed, another plan was concocted. As Oxford went out every day in Mr, Kenrith'e motor car, the chauffeur woe bribed to feign 111- nees, and one of the wheels of the motor car-was tampered with. That affair also had ended abortively, the only good thing accomplished being the annexation of Kenrith'e Jewel* while he lay unconscious. Meanwhile James Grant, Mr. Mc Gowan's secretary, had been suborned. As he was known to be In love with Elspeth Dean, and Elspeth Dean was deep In the confidence of Lady Ard. cllffe and John Kenrlth, it had been be'used aa a tool. But Grant knew nothing of the Syndicate. He thought that Trowbridge—the man who of- Ing—was alone Interested In bringing off the desired coup. Thus, always, the Underground Syn dlcate was faithfully guarded as well The "only good turn, Trowbridge —Id, which Elspeth Dean bad ever done for him, wa# to enable him to protect Lady Hilary from tho malice of the woman who would have had her arrested as a thief. If Elspeth had not come running to tell him what was about to happen, he would not have known In time to eave the girl ho loved. As It was, he had simply ordered An nette Drii* to meet him In the secret room without delay. Sne had not dared to disregard the command, and had hastened to the rendesvoue, leav ing her revenge to be accomplished later. ... Trowbridge had toon followed, and knowing that persuasion or threats would be useless where Hilary was concerned, had come softly upon th* woman and stabbed her In the back. She had staggered forward dead with out a cry, and he had laid the body gently on the floor, lest eome one should be In Elspeth Dean’s room un derneath. Trowbridge ha* been certain' that the dead woman might safely be left to He throughout the whole day.. In the secret room, as nobody eave himself and that client of the Syndicate for whom he acted, knew that the hidden room had not been destroyed by a fall of the tower's root As a lire was planned for that same night—a Are In which It seemed cer tain that Captain Oxford must perish— it would be easy to arrange that the flames should spread a little farther and destroy the lower alto, with all the secrets bidden there. If he had not desired to spare Els peth Dean, she would have been al lowed to sleep as usual in the tower room. Then, she would have heard and suspected nothing; no alarm would have been given, and the scheme would have succeeded. All these things were told by Trow bridge In a few words, and It was not until the last that he dwelt upon that part of his story which was of most Importance for Hilary Vane's future. “Our Sylndlcate ferrets out the se crets of rich people," he said, “or peo ple who would be rich or titled If some one els* were out of the way. Then, It offers Its help In bringing about n de sired object; and as It never solicit* a client who has not something already by a client, and has never betrayed a client. I am not betraying one now, because the man for whom I've acted, under orders from the Syndicate, la al ready betrayed. Kenrlth saw his face, I know, and must have recognised it, as only a few hours ago the man had sent for him—sent for him to keep him out of the way while the Are was started by me. Not that this man or I cared much whether Kenrlth lived or died, but he's known to sit up late reading In his room, and It was thought safer for our plans that he shouldn’t be there. “Kenrlth saw him, as he tried to shoot Oxford, and ahot me Instead; and beeldes, he was pursued by a man younger than he. The one I speak of Is Lord Lochrain. “We—the Syndicate—had found out that there was a secret In Lord Loch- raln’s family. The son of the old lord, this one’s predecessor, had disappeared and was supposed to be dead. If he had not died, the present Lord Loch- r.-tin would not have inherited. But that was not th* secret. The secret was this; “Old Lord Lochraln'a son used to have the tower room, where Miss Dean has, been sleeping. Ho wae In love with a girl beneath him !n station; his father discovered the affair, nnd for bade the boy to see the girl. Not long after a quarrel the father and eon had In consequence there was an attempt on the old man't life. Some one stole Into hie room at night and tried to murder him, but the old man shrieked for help, and help came. The mur derer had escaped, leaving only a knife, known to belong to Lord Lochrain's only son. After that night the young man was never seen again, and hit fa ther'lived on, believing him guilty. The boy had escaped, apparently, by the secret way, from his own room In the towor, and next mornmfc the mark of blood-stained fingers was found on his pillow. “After this the presont Lord Loch rain who—mark this—was visiting In the csstle at the lime of the attempted murder, was practically adopted by his uncle. Later, when proofs of tho son's death In Canada were obtained, he be came heir to the title and the estates, which would not have amounted to much had not coal lately been discov ered on the land. •We of the Syndicate got on the track of this secret We discovered that the young man had married the 5c EVERYWHERE The Convenience of a Savings Account Many people do not realize how convenient a savings account is, when conducted under the simple, up-to-date methods of our Sav ings Department. Afterward* a boy wae born to her while (he was In oxtreme poverty, and soon after hie birth she had died. "There are no better detectives than we have In the Syndicate. We fol lowed up every trace and learned after many difficulties that the child had been taken from a provincial asylum for foundlings, and adopted by a char itable old lady, who knew nothing of his antecedents. That child Is now a man, and Is known as Captain Oxford. “If we had no sure proofs that the present Lord Lochrain hlmeelf was guilty of attempting to kill hi* uncle, and persuading lit* cousin to go off and Join his sweetheart the same night, without knowing what was planned to happen, we were able to frighten him by making him believe that we had them. Also, we were sure It was he who had secretly persuaded the girl that her marriage was illegal, and In duced her to run away from her young husband. Such hints were dropped by one of our agents thnt Lord Lochrain left himself completely In our power, and offered the sum ot a hundred thou sand pounds to the Syndicate to rid him of Captain Oxford, the real heir, who could claim everything, If he but knew. "Lord Lochrain had never seen Ox. ford, and wished to do so. He wa* staying with a friend at eome miles distance from the castle. In order to meet roe and talk over the progress of affairs from time to time. But with the idea of seeing his cousin he decided to come to the Hydro as an ordinary guest. Awnings For stores.
