In every section of the United States, in Indiana, Illinois, New
Jersey, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas,
Coca-Cola has been conscientiously analyzed by the most proficient
chemists in their respective sections, and the verdict rendered has
universally been that “Coca-Cola is as harmless as tea or coffee,” a
fact which accounts for the wonderful popularity of this most delicious
and refreshing of beverages.
K. R..Miller, Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, at Alabama Polytech-
nical Institute, says: “As a result of careful examination of Coca-Cola, I was
not able to separate and identify any cocaine or other deleterious substances.”
B. B. Ross, State Chemist of Afabama, says: “I indorse and concur in this
report of Professor Miller.”
i
R. W. Webster, Director Chemical Department of the CHICAGO LABORA
TORY, found after analysis that there was “Nothing harmful in this preparation.
A cup of strong coffee contains as much caffeine as from two to four bottles of
Coca-Cola.”

"Oh. here, I say I" he shouted. "This
Is too ridiculous. I won't stand this."
"I am afraid you will havs to put up
with It," returned Frank curtly: and
then, having dismissed the servants, he
added:
"Your manner. Reginald, shocks me
beyond measure. Have you no sense
of decency that you talk of rushing
away to card parties with your fathers
body hardly covered from sight?"
"What does it matter?" Reginald an
swered. "Where doei a sense of de
cency come In? The governor Is dead.
No good to howl over It, Is there? It
won't bring him back, will It? And
now, why the deuce did you let him
make such a rotten will? It can be up
set, can't It?" . .
Frank's patience was nearly at an
end. He smiled sardonically.
"By whom? Not you, certainly. The
presumption of the iaw Is that a sane
man can deal with his property In any
way he may think Ut as In the present
Instance, and you know. BejIWlM, tha*

"Ah! I suppose you commiserated

with your devilishly solemn air and

"This scheme was never my father's.
I see now; It was yours, all yours, to

that you could rob me at your leisure.
Fifty thousand dollars you get for your

you line your pockets with nearer live

“Beside myself, yes,” almost shrieked
Reginald. “What man wouldn't be be-

Here I am 21 years old and must wait
nine years before I come Into my own.
"And all these years I must wnlk

schemed for years to oust me from my
rightful place. '
"Oh. you needn't clinch your lists and

unted, having worked himself up to
an Insane fury. "You would like to
floor me where 1 stand, but you don’t
want to make a scene before the eerv'

"But I don’t care a linker's dam for
the servants or for anybody else In
the world. I’ve been defrauded of my
rights by you, and then In your in-
sorence you stand there and refute to

Is rightly mine.

He flung himself forth Into the night,
and Frank shuddered as bn thought of
the uncurbed passions, the misguided
manhood of his young cousin. Tho

invoked rang In hla ears. Months lifter-
wards they came back to blm with
vivid reality.
CHAPTER VII,
The Great Secret.
Just one week elapsed from the time
Reginald Bracebrldge flung himself,out
of his father's house with a curse kntll
rank heard from him again. Then an
attorney whom Reginald had engaged
camo to Frank to- talk over tho matter
of an allowance. .
Frank asked that he bo furnished
with a full account of Reginald’s debts,
both gambling and otherwise, which ho
said he would pay. and told tho attor
ney that ho would make Reginald a
liberal allowance, to bo Increased each
year upon good behavior, until Regi
nald's thirtieth birthday, when he would
come Into possession of the whole prop
Nj K
He warned Reginald through the at
torney, however, that no further debts
would be liquidated, and that tho boy
must live within his allowance.' The
attorney nromlsed to use his Influence
with Reginald and went away.
The list of debts which arrived short
ly was a formidable one. and Frank
paid them with a feeling of shame that
his uncle's son should so trifle with his
father's good business name as to con
tract those liabilities.
The debts paid nnd the question of
an allowance settled, Frank turned his
attention to the letter which ho knew
must bo somewhere among his uncle's
effects. At Inst It- found It In n scen t
drawer of his uncle's private desk.
He drew It out with a feeling of se
cret awo. He hod known part of the
secret of the Bracebrldges slnco he was
21. and his father upon his death bed.
with tears and sobs, had begged his
eon's forgiveness for bartering bis In
heritance for a mess of pottage. The
boy had not understood what his fa
ther meant. Later his uncle had taken
him aside, and after lamenting that
Reginald was not to bo trusted had
shown him one portion of a queer look
ing map which had been cut into four
pieces nnd a velvet box with a great
golden seel. '
Not To Be Trusted.
'These should bo Reginald's," the old
mah 1 said, "together with the secret
which goes with them, but he Is pot
to be trusted. Besides, boy, you have
been cheated out of your share of the
secret.
"Your father, before he married your
njother, fell In love and married a girl
oh the coast of Mai no, when he was
sailing near there. She was uncouth
and Illiterate, but she had a great In
fluence over him, and she codxed from
him not only the secret of the Brace-
bridges, with his portion of the map,
but the wrestling trick, which only the
sons should know.
"I can not give these to Reginald,
the old man went on, "so they are to be
yours. Take them now, for after my
death you might not be allowed legally
to do *o. Guard them with your life.
Do not open the box until after my
death.
"Then find the letter which I Bhall
leave you and learn the whole secret
of the Bracebrldges.- I could not leave
It In worthier hands. You will under
stand msny things then. Including the
reason why I have always urged you
ort with your inventton." ;
Frank could almost' hear the tone of
his dead uncle's voice, ao vividly was
It Impressed on Ms mind, os ho drew
forth from the secret recess the letter
and took from his pocket the velvet
case which had never left his may
since his uncle gave It to him.
"What can be In this box?" he mused.
The setting Is beautiful enough to hold
costly Jewels, but I know that father
and uncle both landed In America with,
out a cent, and I know that undo
brought this with him, so It can not
be anything of great Intrinsic value.
He broke the great golden seal aa his
uncle had instructed him to do and
threw open the box.
A cry of surprise and admiration
broko from his lips, succeeded by a
look almost of tarror.
There before him was the most mag.
nlflcent necklace of diamonds he had
ever seen In his life.
Superb, flawless, they lay In their
velvet bed and smiled mockingly, elu-
elvely up at him. The smallest stone
of tho necklace was larger than any
other diamond Frank had over seen.
Frank lifted the necklace out from Its
case. Then a cry of dismay broke from
his lips.
Three of the diamonds were missing.
In their places were huge unsightly
pebbles.
Ho turned to the letter, broke the
seal and read It through.
“My God!” he gasped when he had
finished.
• The secret of tho Bracebrldges lay
before him. and It was so great, so
appalling a tusk that was laid upon
him that ho shrank almost in terror,
from It.
