New York. July 31.—Trade at the opening
of the local cotton market was quite ac
tive First prlcea were up 6 to 8 points.
The' upturn was mainly due to a bullish
monthly report and higher cables. There
was a lessening of aggressive bear pressure
on the blen that recent private crop figures
foreshadowed the government report of 76
or 77 which would be a bullish showing.
Trading In the afternoon was more active
with prices showing considerable firmness.
At 10 o’clock sharp advances for the entire
list hnd been established with the under
tone strongs
In the late trading proflttaklng
caused a*slight reaction from top
prices. The close was steady net 14
to 17 points above Tuesday's final fig
ures.

velopment over night likely to affect spec
ulation and the markets occurred in the di
rection of the wenther. Tho cool northern
wave which coused recent showers has
shout spent Its effect ns far ns tho produc
tion of moisture is concerned, and Is now
located centrally over the belt. Clearing
weather of sorno duration Is Indicated, rais
ing chances for further hot spells. Official
records show only a few stations with any
rainfall of cousequence In the west nml
pone in Arkansas. Oood showers occurred
In Louisiana and the eastern states. Gen
erally fair weather prevailed today In the
northern and northwestern part of the
wit. Our market opened a fow points up,
and there wns enough buying to hold the
fnln for some time. The weather outlook
and crop condition report by The Journal
of Commerce made sellers somewhat scarce.
The Journal prepared Its readers for a low
condition report some days ago, by the re-
park that the erop Is generally backward,
hut people In reporting on conditions make
comparisons with recollection of what
•tends were last year, or what they should
w at this time of the yenr. For this very
tame reason the bureau figures tyny likewise
ho lower than anticipated. At the present
expectation runs ns high ns a government
condition of 80, nlthough conservative opin
ion is fixed around 77 to 78. Hears were nlso
disconcerted over news from Texns that

show 5 points Improvement for the month,
while Journal of Commerce makes It 3.3
nnd Norden 2%. This would Indicate a gov
ernment of anywhere from 76 to 78, which
must be bullish. With a crop teu days to

@7-8c lower today. The Snow report,
which outlined a decline of 5 points in
spring wheat for July, failed to boom
prices. The pit crowd fought Its ef
fect, and It was pointed out that the
entire Snow report had been discount
ed by the actions of Patten this week.
Snow says the present spring wheat
promises 240,000,000 bushels. The gov
ernment figures on July 10 were 243,-
000,000 bushels.
