THERE WAS NO DOUBT OF 17
He had view's on the prohibition bill,
and did not hesitate to air them U>
the crowd on the- front of the car. A
rather florid countenance and flaming
red nose argued antl-prohlbltlon even
more stridently than his voice.
"Ain’t dose farmers played It," he
said In broken English. "Dey come
op here, vere dey see streot cars an’
tall buildings.: for de first time. Dey

A quiet, clean-cut young fellow, who
had listened to the blatant-mouthed
party, said:

To the end of the line the loud talk,

MAN HAS BEEN TO PANAMA
AND ACTUALLY LIKES IT
Here’s
a man who has returned from Panama
without any muck-raking ambition or
material—a man who has been at work
on the Isthmus and who Is satisfied
1th life there.
He Is C. S. Fairfield, a carpenter,
who has been drawing 13.20 a day from
Uncle Sam since last Muy, und who Ib
now on his way to New Haven, Conn.,
to look after the transfer of some prop
erty.
’Going back? You bet Pm going
back,” said he. "And If the boys In
my trade, or. In fact, any of them
that have a trade, would listen to me;
they’d go back with me.
"There’s plenty of money there. A
fellow draws pay from the day he

Is usslgnod to a house.
’’These houses ara up-to-date In ev
ery way. The sanitation Is the best.
There Is running water In every house
and the government delivers sterilised
drinking water every day. It Is true
that the Chinese drink the water they
get from the faucet and use the steril
ised water for laundry purposes, but
even at that the sickness In the sone
Is so small that It causes comment
from everybody that visits the sone.
“I have two complaints. One Is that
the cigars and tobacco we get there,
excepting at the United States com
missary stores, are bum, and that the
food Isn’t what a fellow would expect.
It Isn’t that the grub Isn’t O. K„ but
that It Isn’t cooked right. That Is the
one trouble of Importance down there.
Nearly all the men complain of It. The
stuff Is the best that can be bought,
but the cooks are the limit.
“When I went there I expected to find
lots of Insects. Aside from the fleas
