CHAPTER XX.
In Deadly Peril.
Detective Sheehan stood on the shore
pointing a revolver directly at the
heads of the cousins.
"Heavens! I feared tills!" gasped
Prank. "He knows that I own this
house and the motor boat, nnd he Is
following us. Lie down In the bottom
of the boat, Reginald,” he commanded.
“You are the one he Is after."
With his hand on the lever of the
motor Frank parleyed with Sheehan.
"What Is the matter. Joe?" he said.
"What are you flourishing that thing
around like a crazy.man for?"
"You know what I am after," return
ed Sheehan grimly. "I don't bear you
any III will, Mr. llrncebrldge, for that
little knock you gave me In the tun
nel. but It Is my turn now. Bring that
young fellow peaceably ashore or 1 will
nhoot.”
Frank touched (he lever and at tho
same moment Hung himself down be
side the motor .so that no portion of
Ms body was visible above the boat.
"Shoot nnd be hanged to you,” he
called back grimly.
The motor boat leaped like a grey
hound held In leash and skimmed over
the water like a living thing.
Sheehan took Frank at hla word.
Ping! ping! went the bullets from Ills
revolver. They all struck the boat, for
Sheehan was a good marksman.
But the swiftness with which tho
boat was moving and the shelter af
forded Frank and Reginald by tho ma
chinery kept the cousins from Injury,
although one of the bullets came with
in a quarter of an Inch of Frank’s
head.
"Now for a race such as was never
run before,” said Frank. "Sheehan
will guess that we are bound for your
father's house and he will have the
village ofllclals watching, while within
an hour the best detectives In this city
will bo storming the doors.
"Now for It,” he said, turning to the
motor. "This will beat everything In
action except a fast nutomoblle. It will
take Sheehan some time to get there If
he depends upon the telephone* and the
cars. We must trust to fate, anyway,
.Reginald. It la a close shave, no mat
ter how you look at It.”
The bont flew merrily over the wa
ter. Frank at the lever with act teeth,
watchful eyes and muaclea of ateel.
He muat get the last ounce of endu
rance out of the stanch little vessel,
and yet not risk a breakdown.
Meanwhile on the shore Detective
Sheehan looked at the empty revolver
ruefully and at the disappearing motor
boat menacingly.
The Pursuit.
"I wish I knew where you were bound
for. my lads," he said. "Hut 1 will take
a chance on that old house of Bruce-
bridge's,
"But- how to get there," lie mused.
"The residents of that place go to bed
at 8 o'clock every night. There Is no
chance to get uny of them out and tell
them to watch the house. There Is no
train going there until morning.
"There Is no possible way of getting
out there except by automobile, and I
expect It will be an hour before I will
be able to scare one up at this time of
tile night. But It Is worth trying."
Saying this, Sheehan turned to walk
briskly down the street.
Before long he was startled to hear
shouts above him.
"Ho, there, Bheelian,” called a voice
which he knew.
"As Heaven Is above me, It Is Mike
Loftus," he said. He hurried up to tho
source of the voice. There sat Loftus,
lllttlnger, Kane nnd a foreign-looking
stranger In u magnificent touting car.

A Stern Chase.
Out on the broad blue bosom of the
Sound the mdtor bont In which Frank
and Reginald Bravebridge were flee
ing for the life and liberty of the
younger man, shot through the asure
waters like a living thing. Occasion
ally they saw a stsomer In the dis
tance, once In a while a belated fish
ing smack or an adventurous row
boat crossed their path. The moon-
llrh* glittered on the waters In a way
to throw a lover of nature Into an
ecstasy of artistic delight, but neither
of the cousins was In a mood to
think of beauty.
Frank’s eyes were flxed upon *hc
lever with which he controlled tho
boat; Reginald's eyes were flxed on
Frank with the expression of a hunted
dog.
On and on they flew, while If they
had but known It, at first far behind
them, then nbreost, and then slowly
forging ahead, the automobile contain
ing th, detectives ran a parallel couitie
to thetrs.
But, luckily for the self-control of
the men In the boat, they knew noth
ing of the automobile. Frank dread?}'
a possible motor car, but If he had
known that a real one had started at
the same time hit boat shot out he
would never have attempted to reach
his goat.
But he did not know tt, and It was
with a feeling of relief that he saw at
last the high wooded bluffs of tho
suburb loom black In the moonlight.
He ran the boat Into a little cove,
moored It and jumped out, pulling
Reginald after him and speaking
aharwiy:
"We must run for.lt, boy."
A Refuge.
Up a flight of rough steps cut Into
the bluff and partly hidden by creep
ers. he hurried, then down again Into
one of the deep ravines that add to the
picturesque beauty of the suburb.
In the side of the ravine, overhung
with vines, was a rough door. Frank
took out a key. opened It. and, pulling

sped, bringing up at another door,
which when opened disclosed the wine
cellar that haj bean James Brace-
bridge's pride. ,
"I remember this door," said Regi
nald. "I used to wonder where It
went, but father said It didn't lead
anywhere; that It was put there by
mistake and had been nailed up."
"No time to talk now. Reg,” hla
cousin admonished, sharply. They
hurried up the stairs, arousing Hud
son, who came toward them with a
revolver held In his hand.
"Don't shoot, Hudson,” said Frank.
Hudson nearly dropped the revolver.
“You Spoke just In time,” he said.
"I thought you were burglars."
"There Is much trouble, Hudson,"
was Frank’s reply. "There probably
will be some men Inquiring for us In u
few minutes. You must pretend to
be Just aroused from sleep. You must
stick to It that you have not seen us
und parley with them as long as you
can. They will finally break down the
doors. Do not resist them, for they
are officers, but keep them as long as
you con from gaining entrance."
"I'll do my best, sir.”
Then Frank hurried Reginald up
stairs to the room that had always
been closed to him before.
He threw open the door with an
air of solemnity-'
"You are going to see one of the
secrets of the Bracebrldges," ho said.
Tho Airship.
Before Reginald was the most cu
rious room he had ever seen. The en
tire roof was open to the sky, but a
taut canvas, drawn to 4he four cor
ners and fastened along the sides, kept
dampness and storm out and was ar
ranged so It could be flung aside al
most Instantly. Upon a raised plat
form Just below this canvas roof was
a curious machlno with propellers and
queer looking shafts.
It looked like an Immense bird, and
In Its large- body Reginald noticed a
tiny cabin-llke space In which there
were scats for four persons.
“What Is this, Frank?” gasped Regi
nald.
'It Is an airship, my boy,” explained
Frank. "Your father worked on It all
his life and bequeathed to me the se
cret that enabled me to perfect It."
•Will It workn
"Perfectly,” . returned Frank. “I
made one short trial trip In It' the
night I was called to New York on
your account. I had Just returned and
was exulting In my success when I
was Interrupted by the telegram from
Barker.
'This ship was built for far another
purpose, Reginald. Only by Its means
can the task of the Bracebrldges be
accomplished; only by this can the
curse which Is upon us be lifted. But
Just now it must serve us."
He rolled the canvas from the roof
by a few swift, dexterous movements.
He turned the cranks of the airship
and got It ready to start.
'Take your seat In It, Reginald,” he
said.
Reginald climbed Into one of the
little seats. Frank followed him. He
had his hand upon the lever ready
t. start.
Out of the silence below came the
"shug! chug!" of ,'in automobile.
