In Love, "Raymond is three year* older than I am," Sylvia resumed, n* her compan ion had made no remark In reply to her latter word*. "Ho ulwayi contrives to spend his birthday at home. Mo you will meet hint In November, Dr. Muel ler. HI* birthday Is the 16th of that month." “Ah, I uin glad of thnt. Ye*, that will be something to look forward to," Mueller returned in n mechanical voice, without glancing round nt Sylvia. "He may Indeed come before Novem ber. Still, 1 do not think that Is very likely. This Is his first visit to Spain, and I daresay he will make the very utmost of hi* opportunity.” A little nltcr.ro followed, broken only by the ruKtle of the autumnal foliage ns the September breeze swelled and sank utnld the trees. -I think it Ik time to resume eur walk. Tiie sun has disappeared; they will wonder at homo what Is delaying me.” - Mueller started, us If he hud almost forgotten Sylvia Thurston's presence, lie had been gazing away toward the fading sky, with a settled gloom and foreboding .stamped upon his face. "Oh. certainly. Miss Thur*ton. Let us be going, by all means. The ufter- noon Is passing all too rapidly, and a very delightful afternoon It Is for me." Dr. Mueller was unusually silent nnd nbstraete-l us he and Sylvia resumed their walk to Monrcomlte. They emerged from the wood, still following the winding pathway, which presently began to ascend un upland, etud In a thick growth of sweet meadow grass, lu ami out, between the waving grass, they pursued their devious way until st a sudden abrupt bend tbe low, ram bling and pletures.iuc mansion that for years hod been the home of the Thur ntons was revealed between towering oaks and poplars In the failing twilight. Five minutes later Hylvla and her still silent friend had reached the home. “Oh. now I understand the cause of Sylvia's long absence," Mrs. Thurston said laughingly, us her daughter en tered the low celled drawing room fol lowed by Dr. Mueller. "I’ve waited for the last half hour or more, and I'm very glad t did so now," she continued lit her soft hospitable voice as she greeted the guest with a warm hand shake and motioned him to a chair dose to the one in which she sat. Shortly after the Judge und Mrs. Thurston went to the drawing room, and later dinner was announced. very pleasant evening followed. Muel ler seemed to have dismissed the gloomy thoughts end forebodings that had troubled him during the afternoon, and to even give himself up wholly to the spirit of the moments that were passing all too freely for his tuate. Much us ho had enjoyed his first e*' perlenro of the Moorrombe domestic circle and general atmosphere, tonight's Impressions were far and away more satisfactory. Tho Judge and his wife were nn Ideal host and hostess; and ns for Sylvia Thurston, Mueller seemed to discover some new eharm In the girl's lovely face and pleasing manner dur ing every moment that passed, "Have I ever before met any girl at all like this girl?" the man thought again and again, ns that happy night wore on; and ho yielded himself to the spell that Sylvia had east about him, finding In this voluntary bondage u new, poignant delight. Grim Foreboding. As Mueller walked homeward In the moonlight tome hours later the happy excitement of the evening at Moor- combe gave place, moment by moment, to the grim foreboding that had trou bled him as he stood by the window of the painting room, and hla mind became gradually tho prey to con flicting and fevered thoughts. Almost with unseeing eyee he en tered the wild, neglected pnrk of The Hollow, and plunged amid Its felts and uplands. In the heart of a sheltered nook, al most hidden front sight, the uncanny old house Is situated, with Its tall steep roofs, Its Ivied chimneys, Its long, nar row. wlqdows, Its general character of sadness, neglect and decay. Carl Mueller, -directing his steps to tha higher ground, and leaving the solitary house nnd Its brooding shadows below him, strode on rapidly toward the lake beach, along the very edge of which the pnrk of The Hollow extends for miles. Tho crash nnd tumult of the water seemed to calm Ills troubled mind little by little, and he cast himself nt full length upon the blulf, Just above the bench, nnd away over the great, heav ing, silvered plain, which extended as far as human sight could follow. "Yes," he enld, giving words at last to the thoughts that beset him. ‘T love Hylvla Thurston, and 1 mean to win her for my wife! 1 shall hurry on the marriage us quickly as possible— so that w-e may be nhle to get away out of this neighborhood before her brother return* to Moorcombe. It was a soothing decision, and the roar of the waves now seemed to ring In Mueller's enra with u voice of en couragement nnd hope. And thus fortified, he rose buoyantly at last from the sounds und turned his solitary steps homeward, the voice of the waves accompanying him all the way, like an anthem of Joy und trl umph. And on the Monday afternoon, true to her promise, Sylvia Thurston started on her walk to Tho Hollow, accom panied by her bosom friend, Monica Peard. Monica and Hylvla bad been constant companions all their lives so far, sand since their return from school they hud been almost dally compan ions. The only shadow upon his happiness that nlKbt was occasioned by Hylvla's references of ber nbsent brother, and by the inspection of Raymond's pic tures— n duty which Mueller found It Impassible to shirk. The pictures were remarkably fine ones—landscapes all of them—painted with a breadth and sympathy, a com mand over the thousand difficulties of color, tone, light and shadow, that In every detail bespoke the master hand. Hylvla lingered proudly and lovingly over her pleasant ofllee of showing these pictures to Mueller, supplyti little histories and explanatory details of each picture, and pausing, as If unconsciously, now and then to give full effect to her word*. It was evi dent enough that she worshipped her brother Raymond nnd considered hltn one of the greatest artists the world had ever seen. Miss Pearl was a short, plump, de cidedly plain-looking girl, with thick features, small dark gray eye* and coarse black hair. But Monica’* was an attractive order of ugliness, and her dark, plain, characteristic face, with Its honesty, good nnture, courage, clev erness and humor beaming from every line of It, Impressed you far more than a perfectly featured countenance unre- deemed by these attributes would have done. Monica's mother was an Irish wom an, hulling from the heart of Celtic Munster, und from her mother Monl- rn had Inherited her wit and humor, her quick good nature and the flavor of unconventional originality noticeable In her words and acts. On this afternoon, however, Monica was unusually silent and subdued. From fhe moment that she had seen Sylvia, when ehe had wheeled over from her own home t> Moorcombe at I'clook, according to appointment, she knew that something had occurred to HOTEL <-ST. Sylvia Thurston sighed, and her sen sitive lips quivered. "Poor Basil! He has been vpry un fortunate. It would have been better for him had he left Redbrow long ago and gone abroad, as he once intended.” He would have done so, I am cer tain, Sylvia, were It not for this mad Idea about marrying you!
