Tucker, aged SO years, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her father, near Sklpperton, Oa., after an Illness of several weeks. She was the wife of J. W. Tucker, and is survived by nine children, four brothers and also two sisters. The funeral services were held this morning at 11 o'clock-from Elham Baptist church, Kov. J. W. Tittle offl-, elating. In the Savannah river, sixteen miles from here. Miss Carrie Baliey, an estimable young lady, was drowned Monday afternoon about 6 o'clock, while bathing with a party of young people. In diving she got Into a rapid' current and was carried Into deep wa ter. Mr. Walker is a Western Union telegraph operator qf this city and Is s splendid young mat He had bis home all furnished and 1 waiting for his bride. The body was found In a few hou Just below the rapids. Mr. Walk* who had been notified, hurried to th river and was there when the body was recovered. Mis* Bailey, with three other girls, was holding to a wire rope when It gave way. The other girls were res cued by some men who were nearby, but -Miss Bailey had drifted beyond their reach. SEVENTEENTH REG’T. JS DIMINISHING When the Seventeenth Infantry left Atlanta Idst winter for Cuba there were 600 men In the two battalions, but re ports from tbe troop# Indicate that the numbers are diminishing rapidly, not from warfare, but from the expiration of enlistments. The men are returning to the States as rapidly as possible, while no recruit* are being sent to take the places of those who have served their time. Nor are there any, rs-en- llstmsnte. At present In some of the companies there are hardly twenty men, which makes the guard duty un usually heavy. Letters from the sol diers state that they are homesick for Atlanta.
