New York, Sept. 24.—The business at the
opening of the cotton mnrket woe active
nml the market was about ns had been ex
pected on the cables. After selling off a
few points there was enough covering to
steady prices a little. Pit traders regard
the uinntet ns considerably oversold. Sen
timent on the whole, however,
very bearish.
Cotton futures opened lower and imme
diately sold off to a new low record, dur
ing the early morning session. Home good
buying Inter steadied prices, and the en
tire list at midday showed slight Improve-

REPORT ON WEATHER.
Alabama—The mean temperature was
nlmve normal, although some nights were
cqub vThe sunshine,’ was deficient. Hnliis
were fairly general on tbo Inst two day*
still needed In some north western coun
ties.
Arkansas-The first five days were unsea
sonably warm, but the last two were cool.
The mean temperature was muefa nlmve
normal. The rainfall was above normal In
u few localities, but was very deficient
over n great part of the state. There was
practically none In the northeast counties.
The sunshine was nlwive normal nnd the
weather generally fair nnd favorable.
Showers were well
distributed. They were heavy In the east
ern portions from the 17th to 19th. nnd
in western portions ou the 20th nnd 21st.
There was about 60 per ceut of possible
sunshine.
Mississippi—Not received.
Tennessee—The temperature nveraged 5
degreea aliove normal, but the week closed
with much cooler weather. The rnlufnll
occurred mostly on the 22d, nml averaged
decidedly above normal In the east nml
below normal In the west. At some west-
ern station* practically no rain fell. There
was a high percentage of sunshine.
Texas—The temperatures was 3 to 4 de
grees above nortnnl. The precipitation was
deficient, except over a Inrge nnmbeY of
Interior, a few middle coast, southwestern
nnd extreme western counties. There was
none In numerous western nrul nontlwni
counties. It wus excessively heavy In the
middle Trinity river valley. The sunshine
was nhundnut. except over tbo region of
greatest rain fall.
North Carolina— 1 The temperature aver
aged from 2 to 3 degrees above normal,
ifittll the 22d It was dry and unfavorable,
hut showers on the Inst two days relieved
the drought. The siiushlne was abundant.
Oklahoma nnd Italian Territory—The first
part of tbo week was warm nnd clear.
The latter days were cooler nnd generally
cloudy, with light to copious showers from
the 19th to 2tst. Inclusive. The sunshine
was altout normal. The ttieau temperature
was decidedly above normal. The rainfall
was heavy to excessive over the greater
portion or the eastern nml southern and
generally deficient over tho central nml
northwestern counties.
Georgln—The temperature was decidedly
nbove normal the first half of the week,
and slightly above- the second half. The
menu temperatures were 8 to 6 degrees
nbove normal. Scattered showers were fre
quent. Rains were general on the 21»t nnd
22,|, being heavy on the 22*1. The weekly

shine was deficient In most districts.

only natural It should sell nearer the price

Receipts of oats are also Inrge and
prices have declined In the Inst day or two,
but the shipping demand still remains good.
The boors made a groat deal yesterday of
the fact that the world** shipments were
large. They were 12,800.000. which looks
(urge, but notice that 5,600.000 of It
len can maintain such shipments. This
would soou exhaust all the wheat we have
for sale. We* do not regard the worm s,
