Chicago, Oct. 1*.—The Pullman Com
pany ha* signified Its Intention of with
drawing from operation In Texas rather
than pay a levy of 2100,000 for taxes,
which has been made against 1L
This year the tax has Increased from
4 to 6 per cent and the company Is re-
qulred to pay In addition 26 cent* on
every (100 of Its capitalization invested
la Texas, which amount* to *7*8,514.
The attorney general of the state has
begun suit against the company to en
force payment of thli tax. Should a
decision be rendered In hla favor the
company will withdraw from Its opera
tions In Texas.

Monday.
W. B. Patterson, as next friend and
employer of Abble Jackson, tiled the
petition. In which he alleges .he wan
given summary punishment' without n
chance for defense. The legality of
Captain David Vlnlng's position aa su
perintendent of the city stockade la also
questioned. The petitioner, who In rep.
resented by Judge Robert I,. Rodgers,
aaka that a thorough Investigation of
ths police methods be made. He
charge, that the process of arresting
a prisoner one night, trying him the
next morning, without hla knowing the
charge, and sending him to the stock
ade before ho can secure a lawyer Is
Illegal. This, It Is alleged. Is tha way
Abble Jackson was dealt with.

Teal, a young man living five miles
from here. In this county, was robbed
of his pocket-book, containing about

large quantity of clothing and a pis

his home last night. He hud Just re
turned from a visit to the fair In Atlan
ta and attempted to mnke It home by
himself, but fell asleep by the wayside
and uwoke to find that he had been
robbed during the night.
