A pardon wan refused W. D. Smith,
of .Macon, by the prison commlaalon
Friday afternoon. Smith was convicted
of mayhem In Bibb county and n«nt
up for life. He threw carbolic acid in
the face of hl« bftardltig house keeper,
destroying her eyesight.
A pardon was recommended for J. F.
Wall, of Augufltn, sent up for ten
years for voluntary manslaughter. Ev
idence was produced before ,the com
mission to establish the fact that Wall
acted In defense of his life.

Robert Branham, the negro accused
of tin attack on the MUses Lawrence
In (’opc-nhtll more than h year ago, was
refused a pardon by the bimrd of com
missioned! Saturday. Branham Is the
negro convicted of the attack on the
two young women, but HubseguentJy
the negro Johnson made a statement on
the scaffold In which he said he wa«
guilty of the crime. Upon this Bran
ham's attorneys asked that their client
he pardoned. Relatives of the nsgro's
victims Insisted that Branham was
guilty and the gallows statement of
Johnson was discredited by the com
mission, which refused to recommend
a pardon.

SIGEL’S STATUE
IS UNVEILED
New York, Oct. 19.—The equestrian
statue of the late General Frans Slgel
wan unveiled this Afternoon. Governor
Hughes and chairman Herman Rtdder
made addresses and the general's son,
Franx, unveiled the monument.
Members of the Wlgel family, among
whom Is reported to have been some
friction concerning the unveiling cere
monies, deny any III feeling exists.

agent of the Fouthem railway, with
headquarters at Charleston, appeared
before the Manufacturers', Jobbers’ and
Bankers* Association last night at the
Commercial Club to discuss the new
policy of the Southern railway In build
ing up Charleston's export trade. At
