Introduced to Vast Audience
at Grand by F. L.
Seely.
An Immense audience, which filled
nearly every seat In orchestra and bal
cony, gathered at the Grand Opera
House Sunday afternoon at S o'clock
to hear Frank H. Leonard, of Brook
lyn. one of the most eminent Christian
Scientists of America, deliver an ad
dress on Christian Science.
Mr. Leonard Is a member of the
Christian Science board of lectureship
of the First Church of Christ, Scien
tist, of Boston, and his ability
lecturer and his profound knowledge
of the principles of his faith instructed
er.d entertained his hearers throughout
his discourse Sunday afternoon,
Mr. Leonard was Introduced by F. L.
Seely, publisher of The Georgian, who
acid: .
"I deem It an honor to be here to
day—to be with people who look up
and who walk In the sunshine. An em
inent divine took me to task for con
senting to participate In this service
today, basing his criticism on the Idea
that Scientists do not glorify Christ, but
that they more or ,less dignify Mrs.
Eddy.
"My reply to him was that my wil
lingness to accept your Invitation was
because Scientists do glorify Christ
and God, and that If some show an un.
usual amount of love of Mrs. Eddy It Is
the fault of the Individual and not of
Christian Science." ,
Mr. Seely discussed briefly the prin
ciples of Christian Science and declared
that Its purpose Is not to supplant
primitive Christianity, but to make It
more' practical. In conclusion he said:
• I. do not Indorse your faith. I may
be enable to. You do not call me
wrong: you do not Indorse mine—you
may be beyond It. I bid you god-

Mr. Seely then Introduced Mr. Leon
ard. who spoke as follows:
I believe no one can successfully
analyze or present any subject to an
other when his statements relative
thereto nre based solely on an academic
or theoretical knowledge of It. The
burden of proof rests with the speaker,
who con never speak with authority
until he has made a personal demon
stration of the principle governing any
subject under discussion; and when he
has done this his theoretical learning Is
superseded by practical knowledge, and
he is fitted to discuss that particular
subject because he knows whereof he
speaks.
That there may be no misunder
standing as to whether my knowledge
of Christian Science la theoretical oi
practical, I am going to give you a brief
statement of my reason for accepting
and adhering to It for more than twen.

the time I learned of Christian Science,

where dissolution seemed certain.

months' treatment from si Christian
Science practitioner, my organic trou

first time In my life I knew the Joy of
health. That was In 1886, and from
that day to this Christian fmlence,
revealed to the world through Mra.

Good of which human consciousness
mu conceive. It la from the standpoint
of having proved Christian Science and
Its eternal efficacy in removing and
destroying "all the Ilia that flesh Is

Christian Science recognises nothing
aa having reality that Is not eternal; I
trust you will clearly understand when,
In the course of my remarks, the real
ity of anything Is questlonsd; I mesn
thereby It Is not immutable and God
like; Is to he overcome and destroyed,
hence Is not eternal, therefore not real.
Mrs. Eddy started the Investigation
which led to the revelation of Christian
Science, from the fundamental basis
that God Is all In all. Starting from
tilts basis disclosed the Principle which
actuated Jesus the Christ and made
possible his demonstrations of healing
and the overcoming of the world, the
flesh and the devil or evil, which were
left by him for man's guidance In all
ages.

Another frequent statement Is that
the Christian Scientists discard the
Bible of Christianity and use In Its
place "Science and Health with Key to

text book written by Mrs. Eddy. Noth
ing could be more untrue, for the dis
cernment of the "Spirit" of the "Word"
which "Maketh alive,” and that Is what
Christian Science Is, comes only as the
result of constant study of the Bible
with the aid of “Science and Health,”
which Is what Its title Indicates, the
“Key to the Scriptures."

Spirit, and In the teachings of the In
spired Scripture. At this point all slm.
flarlty between Its teachings and those
commonly nccepted cease, because
Christian Science reveals to us God as
"a very present help In trouble" now.
without discriminating as to the kind
of trouble; while the ordinary teach
ings put off the promised help until
an undcslred future after death, and
even then for most of us makes It rath
er doubtful. Christian Science teaches
us to live nnd win, while theology has
taught us wo had to die to win. Chrls-
tlon Science teaches us what llfo Is
and how to live It. and Is worthy the
most exhaustive Investigation.
God os a supposed creator of good
and evil, of Life and death/Is not the
Ood we Christian Scientists know, nor
Is He the God of which the Inspired
Scriptures teach us. The Bible tells
us that God Is good, and that He In
omnipotent, omniscient and omnipres
ent, and the name yesterday, today and
forever. This being true, that which
He creates or does must he always the
same and always good. How, then (to
be logical), could He give Life and
Life be good, and then give death and
have ilenth be good? When Life was
good what would beedmo of death, and
when death was good what would be
come of Life? Let us look at It from
another point.
Annihilate Each Other.
If God created both Life and death,
and they are a part of His finished ere.
at Ion, and therefore as eternal as theli
Creator, how can they both exist eter
nally, when one Is as certainly the an>
nlhltatton of the other aa light Is of
darkness?
Again, we are taught that the "wages
of sin Is death;" If this Is true, then
we have to admit that God, If He be
the creator of death, la the creator of
sin. You can not escape this con
clusion by saying that He only permits
sin, for to permit It He must know It.
and how can He know It when the Bi
ble teaches us "God Is of purer eyes
than to behold evil and ran not look on
Iniquity.’!
The Christian Scientists have not yet
renched the point where they have
overcome the universal belief In death,
nor have they yet reached the point
where they cure every case brought to
them, but. like the Prodigal Son, they
have started on their Journey bock to
their Father's house, nnd shall dis
cern that haven of rest and be at peace
In Hla sheltering Love.
If Infinite Mind ever had for one
instant an Idea, perception or cenceu'
tlon of eln. In that very Instant It
ceased to be absolutely sinless. You
may as well assert that an Immovable
object and an Irresistible force can oc
cupy the same place at the same time;
that love and hale, truth and a He. In
telligence and non-Intelllgence are all
synonymous, as to cling to the unseem
ly belief that the good God creates,
permits, sees or knows sin.
God. after He finished His creative
work, called It "very good” nnd rested.
Look around you and see the misery,
shame, zHshonesty, Immorality, degra
dation and crime that mortal man Is
steeped In. and tell me. Is It "very
good?" Can you conceive of the Im
mutable. good God, able to make His
children to reflect Himself, looking
down on such things and enjoying
them? No. a thousand times, no;
such a thing Is utterly Impossible.
These things can not be clung to aa
real, but ouside of and apart from
Ood. for He Is omnipresent. Then we
are forced to admit either that the
Christian Science teaching as to the
unreality of sin Is true, or else that
God Is Infinitely bad.
Is There No 8in?
Is there no sin? Yes, as long as peo
ple believe mi, and so long as they
Indulge In the belief In It, they shall
suffer for It, and there can be no hope
of pardon ao long aa It la Indulged In.
Christian Science teaches that Ihe
only way to escape the penalty of aln
la to atop tinning! When sin la aban
doned and destroyed, there Is nothing
left to be forgiven or suffered for and
man Is free. HIn has no place In the
divine creation. Is not of God and. In
reality, does not exist.
The great sin for which people suffer
the belief in a power apart from
God. God la the only Creator and. If
aurh a power Alst, He must have cre
ated It. If It Is true, and who will
question It. that "A double minded man
Is unstable in all his ways," what hope
would there be for us In seeking salva.
tlon If God be "double minded" and
lias done this thing? He Is the same
"yesterday, today and forever," and so
this power. It It exists, must be the
same "yesterday, today and forever,"
making of evil an eternal reality.

aI1 Had Christians been obedient to the
command, "Prove all things, hold fast
that which Is good." no such record of
sorrow, death and division would have
been possible. There would be no one
on earth goday who would hold the gen
tle. loving Christ or God In aversion or
contempt If It were not for the com
monly accepted belief that God Is the
creator of evil or permits It. This very
teaching haa been the stumbling block
to countless thousands, driving them to
agnosticism and atheism.
The fear of the Lord, which we must
have. Is "the beginning of knowledge."
and "the beginning of knowledge" la "to

Our existing bondage la the result of
the "fear taught by the precepts of

Revelation to Mrs. Eddy,
The revelation of Christian Science
came to Mrs. Eddy os the result of a
life-time spent In continuous desire
end search for the Spirit of the Word.
Mrs. Eddy occupies a position unique
In the history of the world. She stands
alone In her chosen vocation as a re
ligious reformer, as the advocate of
that unqualified trust In God, that un
swerving faith In His goodness, that
absolute, unquestioning obedience to
His commands, which demands of her
such, a life of self-sacrifice, meekness
and humility that she could never live
cases of healing through reading the
hook, the original testimonials In many
of the cases being In the possession of
the editor* of the "Christian Science
Journal" and the "Christian Science
Sentinel.”
Do Not Worship Mrs. Eddy.
We Christian Scientists do not wor
ship Mrs. Eddy. We do love her, but
with a love that has nothing personal
In It, being based on a gratitude for
freedom from mental, moral, and phys
ical death, so great and so precious
that words fall to fitly express It. We
give Mrs. Eddy only the allegiance and
devotion to which her ceaseless labor
In mankind's behalf entitles her. We
are absolutely obedient to her every
teaching, because through her con
tinuous demonstration for more than
forty years, that Ood, reigns, the mys
tery of the way of salvation has been
removed and the glory of God again
been made apparent to mankind.

since 1866 Mrs. Eddy's life has been

With the aid of the Word as revealed
through "Science and Health," man
kind Is learning how to overcome hate

to us a realisation of the Illimitable

the Bible, and discloses the Blprit of
