The buyers state In their letters that they stand ready to take the merchandise as fast as tbe Im porters can send It forward. The plans of the large cotton goods manufacturers ns the last mouth of the year opens are to op erate their mills on s conservative basis un til tbe new year. They will work steadily, but will net attempt to build up stocks. The absence of any speculative buying on the,part of Jobber* ot? other large users of cottons Is acting as a check to any mill building up n stock Of goods for tho spring. On fall of 1998 lines the mills are bolding their operations down strictly to orders. In the woolen trade there is little new business paslng. The agents are getting very few repent or ders on woolens and overcoatings, nlid in dress goods the spring orders are now coming In slowly.
