“The Old Maids’ Convention," ns pro
duced at the Hemphill Avenue Metho
dist church for the benefit of the-North
ulanta Baptist Christmas tree fund,
scored a decided hit Thursday night.
Mr*. Flora Rapp was good. Mrs

many others too numerous to mention.

meet at the Stag Hotel at 7 o’clock and go
to Decatur In a body.
The fair, which la being held by Pythag
oras Lodge to raise funds to furnish tho
new temple, opw uearly complete. Is In
charge of the Masons of Decatur and their
wives, daughter!* and friends. It Is per-
haps the greatest event In the townJu some
time. The crowds it has drawn have been
unusually .arge.
The new temple In which It Is being
Is handsomely, decorated. Many Atlanta
merchants hare contributed articles which
will he sold or auctioned off. There are nlso
a number of voting contests in which hand-
some prises are offered.

New York, Dec. 8.—Physician, and
physiologists are greatly Interested In
the strange case pf Edward Shea, a
young man of Mont Clair, N. J.. who
has„been In a trance for ten days.
When he awakens he tells the mem
bers of the family that he has been to
heaven and talked with many of his
relatives and friends there.

and Miss Carrie Hundley, of Talladega,

of the Floyd Cotton Mills did consider
able damage this morning, but the
damage was covered by Insurance.
Another Are at the same time burned
a tenant house on Elrhth avenue own
ed by Mrs. Charles Wood. There was
no Insurance on this house.

cilman from Second ward, A. D. Har
ris; councilman from Third ward, A. P.

Thlevet Get 35,000 Jewels.
New York, Dec. 6?—Detectives from
the central office as well as those at
tached to the Brooklyn and Bronx bu
reaus. are today searching for two
thieves who after smashing the plate
glass window and stealing more than
85,000 worth of Jewels, escaped In the
throng of shoppers.
Killed by Filling Limb.

Decatur, Ala., Dec. 6.—Edward Mos
ley, a negro, met with a peculiar death
while on Finleys Island, a few miles
below here. In the Tennessee river.
Moseley was driving a wagon through
the woods and uRarge limb fell from
a tree, striking him on the back of the
neck. His neck was broken.

Philadelphia, Dec. 6.—Ernest Pea
body, alias Castleton, who claims to be
tho representative of Henry W. Sav
age. a New York theatrical manager,
and who attempted to Induce a young
woman of this city to accompany'him
to Baltimore on the pretext that she
would he given employment on the
stage, has been found guilty in the
criminal court of attempting to rob the
girl.

and Mitchell streets, on October 21,
Mrs. LuliF B. Smith has hied suit
against the Georgia Railway and Elec
tric Company for $10,000. \V. P. Smith,
her husband, also sues for $10,000 dam r
ages for the Injuries of his wife.
Mrs. Smith alleges that she was at
tempting to leave the car when It
started suddenly, throwing her through
the rear door, striking her head against
the motor box on the platform and
finally Jolting her into the street.

city of Battle Htll, In the suburbs of
Atlanta, will have a now mayor and a
new councllmanlc board.
The new mayor Is T. F. McGahec
und the new councllmen are J. E. Babb,
A. Q. Turner, R. L. Adair, B. T. Wilson
and Ralph Cooper. Mayor McGohee
succeeds the retiring mayor, Murcellus
M. Anderson, who has administered the
affairs of the municipality for two
terms.
The new officers were elected with
out opposition at an election held last
Tuesday.
