to Punish It.
By T. C. 8HOTWELL.
New York. Dec. 18.—In spite of a
regular dividend on New York Central
stock, the market In Wall street was
firm today. The strength of the list
was due to the fact that & large pro
fessional short Interest has been dis
covered In Reading and there Is a de-
alre to punish it One speculator tra
der is said to have contracts for about
30,000 shares outstanding. Liquidation
of New York Central stock began Im
mediately on tlie announcement of the
regular dividend at the rate of 8 per
cent had been declared by. the direc
tors. It la believed nn issue of prefer
red stock will be soon In demand and
the common stock will therefore be
forced down to its proper position
among 6 per cent issues. The metal
stocks were barely steady, a large
abort sale of Amalgamated by an In-
elder being a depressing Influence.
Cotton advanced about 50c a bale.-
Wheat opened Irregular.
London was irregular.
Goldfield stock was steady In spite
of the fact that the light and power
wires have been cut. This cutting of
the wires is regarded as a favorable
development, as it orfnga matters to a
crisis.

CHRISTMAS GIVERS SEARCH
FOR “JUST THE RIGHT THING;”
SOME ANNUAL PUZZLES
Th« Christinas season In Atlanta Is In full
blast. From nil parts of the dty, from the
suburb*, from the neighboring towus, from
tlie country nnd even from a distance the
people pour Into Atbiutn each ibi^ choking
up the thoroughfares, spreading out Into
the side streets, filling the stores, and All
with one purpose In mind—to buy Christmas

The scenes iu streets and stores make one
marvel nt this thing called Christmas spirit
which moves the flood of humanity. Or all
the crowds of people that puss not one |H»r-

for himself or herself. Kneh pair of eyes
Is searching for something for another’s
wants, each pair of ears listens, sub-con*
sciously for n chance remark that may sug
gest a present pleasing to nnotlier. and the
thousands of purses open not for their
owners hut for others.
Of course there Is some selfishness. My
lady steps from her carriage nnd enters a

“Mr*. C.,*’ she muses,
