force of mounted police will begin pa
trolling the outlying portlona of the
city today at noon. The squad will be
under the command of former Police
Lieutenant Cbarlea W. Moaely. The
full number of tbe mounted force la
nine. Including Mr. Moeety. The move-
mant waa Inaugurated at the Inatance
of E. J. Willingham, who la well pleated
with the Idea of mounted police for the
suburbs of the city.

versity closed yesterday for the Christ,
mas holidays, and tha young men left
the city In tha afternoon and night for
their homea. The fall term thus far
haa been auoceaaful In every way. and
the college authorities are highly gratl-
fled at the records made. Factions on
tha campus and among tha students
have entirely disappeared. The college
will resume work again on January 3.

golf players are anticipating with un
usual Interest the golf tournament
whleh begin* hare today. Many prises
are offered and a lively contest la ex
pected. The play will continue all next
week and the rules of the United Hiatea
Golf Association will be strictly en
forced. Balls must be played from
where they lie and no breaking down
of shrubbery will 1>e allowed. The
handlraps allotted are satisfactory to
all and the players will have an equal
chance.

ment of cotton planters In Louisiana,
Mississippi and eastern Texas to sell
direct to European marketa has caused
the organisation here of a co-operative
bureau for marketing their cotton. The
bureau waa formed yesterday by the
executive committee of the Farmers’
Union. It It planned to Incorporate
this bureau.

Bibb adjourned yesterday for the holt-

abort recess until December 30.

Ciisat Britain haa decided to establish
a new naval aquariron In tha Pacific.
The Standard Raya it will be composed
of the present fourth cruiser squadron
and six other county-clnas of crutsern.
These vessel* are named after countlea
of England. The squadron, which will
be called the Pacific and North Amer
ican squadron. will have Its base at
Esquimau. The scheme will become
effective In .May. 1908. This change
uns Included In the admiralty budget
of 1907-08.
