This Is a contingency based | fbursday. upon his winning his suit against Ed ward H. Rarrlman and the conae- quent regaining of control of the Il linois Central railroad. For several days, while court pro ceedings have been In progress be fore Judge Ball, Mr. Fish has been insidiously working his way through a long calling list of prominent Chicago, ans. Incidentally, his calls are said to have had a good efTect on the proxy Hat In his possession. That which apparently appeals most to the banking and other business In terests Is the assertion that Mr. Fish purposes running the Illinois Central from Chicago and making It an abso lutely independent property, unafftll- sted with any Wall street Interest, free to develop Its own territory to the fullest, and ready and free to bene- m by any Interchange of traffic with any and all lines. It Is Mr. Fish's purpose to maintain It as an Independ ent Illinois corporation. According to one of Mr. Fish's attor neys. Wall street Is turning against Harrlman, and, many of the financiers blame him for a good share of the financial troubles. Many of them have tranbferred their proxies to Fish. HR CHANNEL AB0UIC9MPLETE Deep Waterway Being Opened Into New Orleans. Y OF SENT TO NEW YORK Collision in Ionian Yards Resulted in One Death. New Orleans, La., D«c. 2 3.—The Jetties at th« south of the southwest I ass of the Mississippi will be finished this week, thus bringing to a close on* of the greatest channel making under takings In the history of American river Improvement. There Is some dredging between the jetties to be done. These jetties will give the south one of the deepest harbors In the world by opening.tq .the .access of the largest steamships uflout the 100 and 200-foot depths of the lower Mississippi river. The harbor, thus made accessible, has navigable water connection With at least a doten states bordering the Mississippi and Its tributaries, the Ohio, Missouri, Aiknnsas and Red rivers. About >6,000,000 Is being spent «>n the Improvement by the United States government, which has the work In charge. ' » The work was begun four years ago. The Jetties are nearly parallel walls, one about three and the other about f*ur miles long, lying over half u mile Apart and built In the shoal water at the Junction of the pass with the Gulf of Mexico, Their purpose Is to confine end thus accelerate the river's current across a mud bar about three miles 1-rond, so as to produce a channel at b-ast 1.000 feet Wide with a minimum depth of 35 feet. The swift current which they have produced, aided by ‘• edging, has caused a tremendous mom and has clrendy made 50 to 8." fret of water In some places where at thf beginning of the work the depth was but little over a man’s head. One man was killed and several re ceived slight Injuries In a head-on col lision Saturday afternoon on the South ern, In the Inman yards. The dead man Is William R. Race, a white fire man. He was caught between the ten der and cab of bis engine and crushed to death. The collision occurred about 5 o'clock, when passenger train No. 3, north bound for Chattanooga, ran Into a southbound freight just entering At lanta. It Is said the accident was the result of a mistake in allowing the pas senger train to take the track it did, and that the switchman should have thrown It on the northbound mnln line. The engines were close together be fore either engine crew realized the trains were on the same track and that a collision was Imminent. Fireman Race, of the frplght, was attempting to jump when the engines crashed and he wns caught between the tender and the cab. The engineer and the head brakeman. who was riding on the fire man's side of the cab. were both unin jured, altho they did not have time to leave the engine. The body of the dead fireman wns removed to the undertaking parlors of H. M. Patterson & Son, and later was eent to Little Falls. N. Y.. the unfor tunate man's old home, for funeral and Interment.
