Out as a Bright Star in
a Dull Sky.
Christmas will be n day to be remem-
■ bened by the convicts In the Federal
penitentiary and the unfortunates con
fined In the city stockade.
For that day will be one Ions day
of rest, pleasure and feasting. As told
a few days ago in The Oeorglnn, Santa
Claus remembers the dwellers of the
under-world who have been unfortu
nate enough to get caught, and on
Christmas he tries to make them happy.
Out at the Federal pen the prison
ers will have a dainty breakfast, a
hearty Chrlstmaa dinner and then sup
per In their cells. Smoking In cells
Wlir be allowed, and a program of mu
sic. both vocal snd Instrumental, and
recitations will be rendered.
While not as elaborate preparations
have been made al the stockade, the
prisoners will have a good dinner with
trimmings to please, and will spend
the day In rest.
Christmas day* for the Inmates of the
Confederate Soldiers’ Home will be a
day to live long In the memory of the
veterans of the gray.
The Daughters of the Confederacy all
over the state have taken ui>on them
selves the task of making this Christ
mas the most delightful that the old
soldiers have ever spent, and with this
end In view, boxes large and boxes
small, containing good things to eat
and good thing! to wear, are being
forwarded to Captain "Tip" Harrison,
secretary of the home, and Dr. Amos
Fox, the treasurer. Nine boxes were
received from the Savannah chapter
Saturday and many others are expect
ed to arrive by Wednesday at noon.

neral of Jerome Castleberry, who died
at hla home, (5 North Green-st., Sun
day of pneumonia, waa conducted from
tho First Baptist church yesterday aft
ernoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. O. J. Cope
land, assisted by Rev. B. F. Fraser. Mr
Castleberry waa the second son of T.
Castleberry, president of the First Nn
tlonal Bank. He was the Junior mem.

and la survived by hit wife and four

of the British steamer Rollersby, Just
In this port from Buenos Ayres, re*
porta the eruption of a submarine vo!

Verde Islands, on the morning of No
vember 28. The weather was clear and
a smooth sea was running, when a ter
rific explosion was heard and n
column of water shot Into the air
nearly 160 feet. A heavy vapor of
smoke fose above the water, and for
an Instant hid from view the geyser.
The water within a radius of a mile
waa whlppad Into a wild sea. and with.
In a radius of half a mile appeared to
he boiling. The column appeared to
be fifty feet In circumference. Hun
dreds of dead fish were seen floating
In the sea. For two hours detonations
could be heard.

Macon, Ga.. Dec. 24.—When tele
grams from their attorney!* in Wash
ington were received by Greene and
Caynor yesterday, telling of the de
cision of the court In the famous case.
It was difficult to find In their coun
tenance any trace of disappointment.
The telegram merely brought them
the news that the certiorari had been
denied, nnd while It was from the
court of last resort, the only remark
v. nn made by Captain Q&ynor, who said
that It looked aa though he would not
eat Christmas dinner In Macon. Asked
to break their long silence, they de
clined, saying that perhaps they would
make a statement later.
During the stay of these famous pris
oner# In the Macon Jail, their move
ment# have been a prolific theme for
newspaper correspondents.

FORMER MACON MERCHANT
DIES IN NEW YORK CITY.

Macon, Ga., Dec. 24.—Gu# Nussbaum,
a former Macon merchant, died In New
York early la#t week. During the four
teen year# he spent In Macon between
1876-80 he grew to be one of the lead
ing merchant# of the city. While he
resided here he married Mis# Clara
Dreyfou#, sister of Mr. Ed Dreyfou#,
now of Atlanta. He was reckoned
among the most successful ami enter
prising merchants of Macon when he
was in business here.

Nullivnn died nt her home In Houston
county, near Macon, yesterday morn
ing. She whs forty*five years old and
Is survived by her husband and four
children. She whs a prominent mem
ber of the Baptist church and highly
esteemed In her community.
