REVENUE8 WILL DECREASE
IN POLICE COURTS
Special to The Georgian.
Macon. Go., Dec. SO.—There Is some
speculation ns to what the revenue
from police court fines will bs for 1908.
TIiIb speculation Is not confined to
Macon, but to all the cities of the state,
and Is brought about by the Idea that
tho absonce of liquor will cause a con
siderable falling off In the receipts
from tinea.
For the year 1907, ending with De
cember 17th, the ffacal year, the re-
celpts from lines in the recorder’s
court of Macon paid Into the treasury
were about 117,000. Thle doee not rep
resent the amount of lines Imimsed, for
the reason that thousands of dollars
wtre nerved out In time, and remitted
or suspended by both the mayoF and
council and recorder, b.ut the amounts
actually paid to the treasurer.
A la?ge proportion, probably 50 per
cent, wae from line for violations of
the city ordinance, traceable to liquor.

Washington, Dec. SO.—Commissioner
Herbert Knox Smith has replied to tha
Standard Oil statement protesting
against the 329,240,000 flnp for rebat

on a technicality In which he says the

practiced and with , the knowledge of
the oil..trust and the Alton road.
In conclusion the commission says
"This Alton rate was substantially a
rebate; wae the most effective kind of
discrimination, because It killed out all
competition; was secret and was con
cealed by secret methods; It sought to
be Justified only by another llko secret
rato which also was covered by secret
methods; was only one of a great sys
