Macon, Ga., Dec. 81.—On account of
the shrinkage of business on the Geor
gia Southern and Florida railway the
official* have decided not to restore
trains Nos. 11 and 12, known as tho
Valdosta express, thus declining to
consider the petition signed by prac
tlcally all of the business men of the
city and asking for the restoration of
the trains.
Vice President Parrott, in a letter to
the chairman of the Georgia railroad
commleelon, states that the volume of
business, both freight and passenger,
has materially decreased and that the
earnings of the train have been from
30 to 50 cents-per mile, which Is not
sufficient to pay the running expenses
and the Interest on the bonded debt
of the road. It Is also claimed that
the earnlnge from the Valdosta express
nvcre taken largely from the earnings,
of trains Noe. 1, 2, 3 and 4, and that In
consequence the train was a money
loser.
In a letter to President W. E. Small,
of the chamber of commerce, Vice
President Parrott states that a general
shrinkage In' the volume of business
makes It necessary to effect a reduc
tion of expenses and that this must be
done either by curtailing the passenger
service or reducing the wage* of the
road's employees.
