President Taft to Take Part in
Ceremonies on Site of the
Kentuckian’s Birth.
Hodgenville, Ky., Nov. 9.—President
Taft la her* today to dedicate tho Lin-
' coin farm, a splendid granite atrtirture
which enahrlnra the humble log cabin
. In which Abraham Lincoln waa born
102 years ago. The memorial building,
with the land, haa been perpetuated at
a coat of 1125,000, and It waa today
turned over to the government thru
President Taft.

From the time that tha farm passed

years after Abraham Lincoln was
born. It went Into various ownerships.
Once It waa bought by a Methodist
evangelist froifr Tallahaaaae, Fla., Rev.
J. W. Bingham, who took the cabin
apart «jid exhibited It around the sur
rounding country to get money to con
duct his work. It waa eventually put In
storage at Long Island City, N. Y„ and
afterward the Lincoln Farm aaaociatlon
waa organised to restore It to the old
farm, which waa subsequently bought

in Recent Race — Politics

Aaron Floyd, private aecretary to W.
Z. Smith, general manager of water
works waa dismissed from the depart
ment at the meeting of the board Wed
nesday afternoon. Mr. Floyd did not
deny that he had supported Park
Woodward In the race for general man
ager. but neither John E. McClelland,
who went before the board In Floyd’s
behalf, nor the requests of several
members of tha board, could get any
statement from Mr. Smith as to wheth
er Mr. Floyd's political views or some
thing else waa the cauae of hla dls
missal.
It Is a well-known fact that six or
eight of the employees In the water
department favored the candidacy of
Colonel Woodward, but Mr. Floyd waa
the only one dismissed. The Inference
to be drawn from tho board meeting
was that Mr. Floyd waa dismissed be
cause of the very confidential position
he held. L. H. Perdue was named aa
his successor.
The vote to sustain the general man
ager and dismiss Floyd was: Wood-
aids, Davis, Lake, Bernhardt, Lester,
Mason and Dunn.

In charge of Governor Willson and
Colonel Andrew Cowan, of Louisville.

Prealdent Taft left Louisville for
Hodgenville at 9:90 o'clock this morn
lng. He remains here until lata thla
afternoon.
In his dedication speech. President
Taft said. In part:
"Few men have coma Into public
prominence who came absolutely from
the eoll, as did Abraham Lincoln. It
Is difficult to Imagine the lack of com
fort, accommodation and the necessi
ties of Ufa that there were In the
cabin In which he waa born. With an
Illiterate and shiftless fathar and a
mother who, tho of education, and
•force, died before he reached youth,
his future wae dark Indeed. In the
stepmother that his father found for
him. however, he had a woman of
strength of character and of education
fnough to assist him.
"The almost squalor In which ha
passed hla early life made him familiar
with the sufferings, thoughts and sym-
S ithles of the plain people, and when
e came to great power hla under
standing of their reasoning and of
thalr views gave hitn an advantage In
Interpreting their attitude which can
not be overstated.

changed their votes, tho, and then gave
notice of a motion to reconsider the
matter at the next meeting of the
board. However, the board seems to
he Arm In Its decision to sustain the
general manager.
Commissioner Barrett left the meet
ing before adjournment. Commissioner
Argard changed hla vote, making the
adoption of Mr. Smith's report unani
mous. Then Commissioners Johnson
and Stocks withdrew tnelr motion for a
reconsideration. So the matter li set
tled.

GRADY CADETS TO MEET
FOR FINAL ENLISTMENT
With mors than enough applicants
to (III out tha company, the Grady Ca
dets will hold their second meeting
Thursday night In the enlisted men's
parlor at tho Auditorium-Armory. Tho
military code of Georgia limits the en
listments to 59 men, and the work to
be done by the charter members of the
organisation, who formed the company
Monday night, will be to decide on the
best and moat suitable men fronj those
applying.
The men who were present and Join
ed Monday night will act on the appli
cants Thursday night, nnd a unani
mous vote will be neceseary for any one
to be elected aa a member. By this
method the company hopes to secure
only the men who will aid In making
the cadets a crack military company,
and, at the same time, permit the de
velopment of the social side In tho
highest possible degree.

The orchestra of Atlanta Typographi
cal union gave a dance at Central acad
emy, in Alabama-st., Wednesday night.
The orchestra, now composed of 10
pieces, but soon to be augmented, fur
nished the music, for the more than 100
couples who attended.
The orchestra, which was but re
cently organized, wjll figure prominent,
