Immediately after the call there was
little change in the market, the tone rul
ing steady with prices within a point or
two of the previous close, tho several
prominent brokers were selling.
In the afternoon the market waa some
what steadier and a rally of 2 to 6 points
from the low, levels took place, leaving
prices at 2 o'clock 2, to 8 points below
Monday's final quotations.
In the last hour there was a sharp ad
vance all along the line. Shorts covered
freely, ami to this the advance was mainly

idence. R. L, of a cut in goods prices
came as a surprise, the more so as it
states that the reduction was partly mado
to dispose of surplus stock: “A reduc
tion in prices of staple cotton goods by
leading mills of %c to %c went Into ef
fect this morning. The reduction in the
price of Fruit of the Loom was mads
first, and was made to get rid of surplus
stock which hod accumulated in spite of
curtailment."
A cable from Liverpool said: "Advance
due to market being oversold; shorts cov
ered largely."
Our market opened a few points higher
and short covering was pretty active
at the start, but as soon as U subsided
price* began to sag. It in a nervous
market before tho government reports,
that is all.
