ggr. Chickens don'loart^fora finely
painted nnd decorated house, but they
do want a clean, roomy, airy and sun
shiny place—a place that does not sntell
strong enough to make ydu want to
hold your nose nor n plafce overrun
with vermin. And while It should be
alrv. that does not mean to .have a lot
of cracks with the wind whistling thru
at the rate of 10 miles an hour.
TIIE COST OF MAINTAINING
faHTLTRY.
The cost of maintaining a flock- of
hens varies with the locality, or rather
the market- values of the feed. You
con no nioro tell accurately what It
costs to keep a lloek of henn than you
can tell the cost of keeping different
families. A great' deal depends on the
keeper. You should learn to take ad
vantage of everything that comes along
in the way of feed. If you have a large
flock to feed thru the winter, tt would
Im cheaper to buy right after harvest
time In large quantities and store It
away. I have bought wheat (the beat
grade) ns low as 90 cents pet* bushel;
u,n now paying $1.60. I have bought
nets as low ns 38 cents; they are now
selling at 68 rents. This Is, of course,
Atlanta market. The cost to keep a
lien for one year In a yard where •every.
I king she cals must be given her by
tlie owner Including oyster shell._ grit
nhd charcoal, will be between $1.25 and
$1.50, according to tho variety.
FEEDING OF DUCKH.
The feeding of ducks varies a little
from that of chickens. Remembor the
duck has no crop, therefore can not
stand as much hard grain as chickens.
Tlicv should bo given mashed feed.
They are heavy eaters, eating nearly
twice as much as cnlckcns, but they
respond more readily to feed If of the i
proper nature. Ducks will begin lay
ing at six months old, very ofton
earlier. They are fully matured by the
time they are live months old nnd
ready for market.
You should lie vfry regular In your
feeding of ducks, as they soon learn the
feed hour and will be very annoyed
and restless If not fed on time. Feed all
they will eat up clean, never leave state
food around to become filthy or flrma-
tlvc. Under th* law of nature they
would naturally feed on water, grass
and roots and low forms of animal
life. Always give them some green
food, since they are on a range. Do
not attempt to feed the newly hatched
■lucks before they are 8$ or 40 hours
old, giving them this time to absorb
the yolk, the some as chickens. For
your first food, you can give two-thirds
■■art wheat bran, about one-third part
com meul, moistened to a crumbly mass
with a little water or milk, add a lit
tle line grit. This should be fed them
often, every two or three hours. Just
what they will eat up clean. Olve them
dear water to drink. In a fountain deep
enough for them to get their bills and
heads In. but not thetr bodies. When
one week old give three parts wheat
bran, two parts corn meat, about five
per rent of beet scrap. Keep changing
the above so as to have equal parts of
uhclt bran and corn meal at six weeks
of age, with about fifteen per cent beef
scraps. With this feeding the ducks
will be ready for market at ten weeks
of age. When ten weeks of age you
can begin to feed grains. Wheat I*
a tine grain for white skin, oats steamed
• very night makes bon* nnd muscle.
You can feed *11 the food* to duck* In
ii trough, feeding Just as much as they
will ent Up clean In fifteen or twenty
minutes. For the laying ducks, a good
ration la as follows: Equal parts corn
meal, wheat bran and low grade of
flour. To thla add one-fourth the bulk
of cooked vegetables, such as potatoes,
beans, etc., mix in a little beef scrap,
about twelve per cent, mixed with wa
ter to a crumbly mass. Another laying
mixture Is as follows: Three parts corn
meal, two parts wheat bran, one part
red dog, or low grade of dour, one part
cut alfalfa, clover or cut vegetables,
one part beef scrap, mixed to a crum
bly mass. If you have milk handy, It Is
much preferable to water. These feeds
should be used twice a day with a noon
food comprised of a little corn, wheat
and oats. Keep grit and ground oyster
shell before them all the time. Also,
plenty of water. Remember ducks wash
their food down with water.
