GEORGIA THE POULTRYMAN’S
PARADISE.
Are you looking
ta r t thp be 'unlte(l Advtce
States to embark
In the poultry
business? Then
come to Georgia.
I have received a
number of letters
recently asking
about the condi
tions for poultry
business In this
section. In an
swering such a «
• question one of IJOCtOT
the first points to
consider Is the ._
market. The market Is the
portant port of any business. It must
he a market that will demand 4 rea
sonably steady supply of both egp and
poultry to make the production of same
a profitable one to the raiser.
Again, there must not be an over
production already to curtail the profit*
of the aggregate whole.
There should bo citle* largo enough
with population* congested enough, *o
that a large part of the people will
have to depend on certain portion* or
their fellow* to supply the demand they
create for egg* and poultry products.
The dealer*, a* a rule, prefer to sell
a superior article at a slightly higher
price, rather than sell an Inferior ar
ticle at a much lower price. To edu
cate the trade to demand a first-class
carcass and strictly fresh eggs Is Im
portant. With such conditions exist
ing. the man or woman engaging In the
chicken raising business will And it
not only a pleasure, but also one that
will pay them for their time and atten
tion. . # .
Why the people of Georgia havq, not
ever engaged In the poultry business I
do not know. We have always and are
now Importing 75 or perhaps 80 per
cent of both poultry and eggs from our
sister states. Hotels and restaurants
would not use cold storage eggs If they
could get the fresh product any more
than you would. The cold storage egg
Is better than none at all. I hope to
see the day when every farm in Geor
gia will have from one to five hundred
head of thoroughbred chickens on the
place.
To the man or woman with a small
capital, from two to live hundred dol
lars. the determination and grit to work
hard, to start In a small way and be
patient and grow up slowly—-to such a
person Georia offers exceptional oppor
tunities. Jn addition to the market for
the commercial product, there Is no
richer held toduy than the South for
fancy poultry. The Southern fanciers
today are demanding the very best In
•very variety. Thousands and thou
sands of dollars are going North, Ekst
and West for fancy poultry and eggs
for hatching. Every dollar should stop
right In Georgia or the Southern states.
THE BLACK MINORCA.
Minorcan ure the heaviest of the so-
called laying breeds. They not only
hold this title, but also the title of lay
ing the largest egg of any breed of
fowls, if ever eggs are sold by weight,
the Mlnorcas will be strictly In It.
They are a fowl of long proportions,
having rather large combs, long wat
tles, long neck and back, with full
flowing tall carried at the same angle as
the Leghorn. They are quite different,
however, In form and makeup from the
Leghorn. Six Minorca eggs will
weigh a pound; other varieties require
eight and nine. The head of the male
bird Is large and full, comb Is single
with six points. Comb should stand
erect and carried well back from the
head. The blade or part of the comb
not serrated should be smooth and free
from wrinkles or thumb marks. Combs
frequently griAv so coarse and large as
to twist all out of shape. The front
part ns It rises from benk Is a mass of
folds and wrinkles, which causes a
heavy discount, anti deep thumb marks
on one side, the front also being a se
rious defect. If the rear end of comb
awing* around to one side from a
straight line, it Is tt serious defect. If
the points **f the cnmli are limber and
turn over nt tips, it is a serious defect.
If the whole top, however, of comb lays
nvrr to one side, it Is a disqualification.
Tin* wattles should lie long and (tender.
Ins, oblong in shape, thin and free
from wrinkles. When they fold or ap-
jtonr double on front edge, it Is a defect.
Very rough, coarse In texture Is a de
fect. They should hang In a cup shape
ami he of equal length. Their ear lobes
are almond shape, smooth and free from
wrinkles. Neck long, arched, with full
flowing hackle, extending well over the
shoulders, bock long, broad at rhoul-
derr; with a gradual downward slope to
the tail. Saddle feathers abundant and
flowing well from point* of wings. The
lKt**k should not be roached. You often
soi* a good bird otherwise with a reached
hack; this Is a hud defect. The tall
should 1k* rather long and full, carried
low ut an angle of about 35 degrees
from the horizontal. Sickles should be
long and curves carried beyond the
main tall to- ‘-er$. The body and fluff
feathers are snort and trim, laying close
like those of tin* leghorn varieties.
Their legs are rather large and strong.
*.*t well on their bodies, well up from
the ground. Hhanks are free from
Lather* and stubs, and small stubs or
feathers on legs of shanks disqualify.
The female in shape and all sections
are like those of the male, with the ex
ception of the comb. The couth of the
female should be very flexible In tex
ture, railing over to one side of the
head, with a fold from the beak. It i
