bearish opinion and to spot developments.
However, the market again
support this morning soon after the open

prices rallied In consequence. According
to our New York wire, the btfljlag li
chiefly directed at the accepted large
short Interest on the argument that them
may be a large amount of low grade cot

the contract market. The Present huU
move, as young as It Is. has already
changed the technical situation a good
deal, inasmuch as many of the late and
smaller shorts have covered. March was
sent to 8.88 by this demand to cover, but
general opinion continues bearish on the
government crop basis, which suggests on
Rand plenty for everybody. -
Snots are reported somewhat more ac
tive today and steadier, owing to the ad

Is fluctuating nervously, according to the
application ot power by the new bull ele

By CHARLES W. STORM.
New York, Dec. 13.—There was a ma
terial decrease til business and in specu
lative interest shown at the opening of
the New York stock exchange today.
During the first fifteen minutes of trad
ing a number of Important Issues were
not- dealt in. Among these were such
ordinarily active stocks as Baltimore and
Ohio, New York Central and Pennsyl
vania. In what trading there was pricey
were generally shaded. Union Pacific,
Reading, Steel and Amalgamated -Copper
sold at fractional concessions, but at the
end of fifteen minutes none of them
showed a loss of irion* than ft a point.
Americans in London were generally
firm, but profit-taking was in evidence In
Canadian Pacific.
The curb market opened generally firm
with no price changes of significance.
Lehigh Valley and St. Paul.
Ing pressure Canadian Pacific fell 1%
and steel declined ft. '
London was a small seller In this mar
ket.
Pronounced strength was fchown In the
afternoon trading, many railroad and In
dustrial stocks advancing about 1 pplnt on
vigorous buying. Steel sold at 65 and sev
eral specialties also advanced. ♦
Stocks closed strong.
Government bonds unchanged. Ot^gr

Dallas, Tex., wires: “Texas cloudy Jn
the south, north and east; frost
and southwest. Oklahoma generally clear
with scattered frost."
Heavy covering has pretty well evened
up the market. Sentiment Is rapidly
changing. It Is reported from Manches
ter that Lancashire sales during Septem
ber and October were the largest ever
known. Under the circumstances we can
not advise, as we have been doing, to
follow the short side any further,at this
time. We expect some further short cov

yalop at these prices.
Following are 11 a. m. bids: December

The market does not show the strength
it should on all the buying of today.

as; general rains In the central states.
Storm warning: West Indian disturb
ance now apparently of slight Intensity

Spot demand reported more active to
day, and prices steady,/owing to the ad
vance In futures.
The .New Orleans Times-Democrat i
Mysterious support, variously attributed
to old shorts buying from new, to West
ern speculators buying for a long pull,
to shorts covering by buying from hedge
sellers, and to straddlers buying In Amer
ica and selling in Europe. Lifted contract
values yesterday, thereby adding another
day of bearish disappointment to the
proacnlng panic among Interior spot hold
ers, but-actual cotton traders said the
only change In the interior was a cut In
a good trade demand, and the presence of
a horde cf buyers ready to take hold on 1
scale-down.
