or-If they become / Jnrfnr

the least bit damp
by running In the
damp grata, the blood stops circulating
and they catch cold. This cold. If
neglected will run Into roup, and when
once It gets Into that stage It certain
ly la hard to cure.
Roup la, undoubtedly, the most
dreaded of all diseases among poultry,
nnd It Impairs thu growth, weakens
nnd will kill more chickens than all
other diseases put together. Any
chicken that has ever had a standing
rue of roup Is seldom ever lit to breed
from thereafter.
The minute you notice this trouble
among your chickens, you should ex
amine closely their roosting quarters
and see that no drafts blow on them,
and that no cracks are In the house
thru wlllch the wind could blow di
rectly on the heads of the chickens.
If yop find they are too crowded at
night, they should he divided Into
smaller flocks, or put Into larger roost
ing houses, or be made to roost under
a shed out In the open air. The open
air houses, with screen wire on all
sides, are the best places chickens can
possibly roost In until the middle or
Utter part of September. This Is far
better than allowing them to roost In
boxes or In houses that have any drft*
whatever.
. As soon as you see a slight discharge
running from the nostrils of any chick
ens It Is best to examine the things
above mentioned and see If they are the
cause. If so, change the conditions
immediately. If not, go to work at
once and separate the well ones from
the others, and put them In new quar
ters, and go to feeding them good, rich,
succulent food. Give them plenty grain
food at least two or three times per
day. and also plenty green food. It is
so, true a saying as ever was that ‘stuff
a- cold and starve a fever,” and cer
tainly applies to chickens. If fed well
and nourished It will help your chick
ens to get over this trouble quicker
than all the doctoring you can do. They
should have grain food%i
and also mash
givtn them In a trough and not on the
ground. Barker’s Condition Powders
should be fed In the soft feed once per
day, which will help very materially
to cleanse their systems and purify
their blood, and put the liver In active
working condition. Ofter these colds
will yield to good feed and care quack-
er than to catch every bird and treat
it Individually. I am bitterly opposed to
doctoring chickens if It can bn avlded.
Conkey’s Roup Cure, permanganate
of potash, or any of the other good die.
will yield to good feed and care qulck-
wlll aid very much In keeping tho dis
ease from spreading to the chlckena
that are not affected.
It Is also a good Idea to have the
houses whitewashed, with a strong so
lution of crude carbolic acid In the
whitewash, or chloro naptholeum. The
yards which the chickens Inhabit
should be plowed up or spaded, and
some freih lime spread over the yard
before this la done. Borne grain should
be spaded into the yard while this Is
being dons, which will mako your
chlckena take lots of exercise.
They should not be allowed out In
the damp grata early In the morning,
and should be kept dry above alt things.
Any chlckena that are badly affected
end In a weakened condign should be
killed and burned, and try to save tho
stronger ones Instead of threatening
them. This trouble Is usually more ag.
i the early-hatched onea. Oft
en It will start among theae late-hatch
ed ones, and will be contracted by the
older ones, and very often an entire
flock Is contaminated from a few late-
hatched chicks.
- If this disease la treated In time It
can be checked, but it you expect to
save your flock, you ahould get buay
as soon as It la first noticed, and leave
nothing undone to stamp It out. It
causes the loss of thousands of dollars
all over the United 8tateB, and we do
not have It any worse In the Southern
states than In the North and East.
. Much could be done to prevent roup
ever appearing In the flocks it more
care and judgment was used In mating
your breeding stock and hatch more
ctVckens from fowls that were matured
and had good strong constitutions. En.
tlrely too many weak, undeveloped
specimens are used to breed from,
which causes weak chickens to be pro
duced from them.
