THE CARE OE A POULTRY PLANT.
The subject of
this article as
sumes the fact
that care is essen
tia! In conducting
a poultry plant.
The way the poul
try work was con
ducted on the av
erage farm some
years ago would
not' have Justified
this remark. Then
the fowls were left
to care for them-
silves. Hardly a
farmer thought of
buying grit, oyster
shell*, charcoal or beef scrap. It was
simply a case of letting the fowls look
/>ut for themselves with an occasional
pall of oats or cracked corn. Things
have changed and today care has be
come one of the factors In the keeping
of poultry. The result Is that we have
better poultry pn the farms and the
farmer seeing the results, Is going Into
this side of the work more extensively.
Good substantial buildings are being
erected Instead of allowing the hens to
live all over the faVm and to roost on
the wagon wheels. Warm quarters art-
provided and the necessary foods given
that the hens may do their best.
So many tlmes people want to know
If there Is much work attached to poul
try' keeping. Why, of qiurie there Is.
Usually It is not hard work, but there
Is plenty of light work. Those who
attempt to keep poultry because they
Imagine that there Is no work attached
will find themselvea sadly mistaken.
There Is work and lots of It, If every
thing Is properly attended to. A flock
of from 300 to 500 hens will keep nn
ordinary man quite busy all day. If
the work is systematized and based on
modem ways of keeping poultry he
may keep twice that number and yet
attend to most of tho work himself.
Never go Into It, however, because you
think that there Is .but little work. It
ts not simply a case of feed the chick
ens morning, noon nnd night and go
around with a bushel basket nnd gather
tho eggs; nn, there are many things
besides which take lota of time If dono
properly.
Every one keeping poultry should
have a regular routine of work. He
systematic. You will save yourself lots
of work by doing this. When you start
out In the morning have) a certain pall
for feed nnd go thru the various pens',
and feed. On this round watch out]
carefully to see what things need atten
tion in each pen. Here you will And
the hopper empty; there the litter Is
pretty well soiled and needs chancing,
and so on. When you make your rounds
the second time bo prepared to attend
to these things. If you clean the drop
ping boards each day you will And It
much easier and much more sanitary.
This really should be done, as the fumes
arising from this manure nre not good
for the hens roosting above It. The
feathers are soiled and tile air Is bad.
It will pay you to clean out dally.
So will all of the work on the poultry
plant—do It when It needs to bo done.
Do It thoroughly and It will he a satis
faction to you, Havo a rare for the
fowls and they will repay you. If you
doubt this Just take two pens and ex
periment on them. Otve one pen the
nest of care and the other Indifferent
care. You’wlll be surprised at the re
sults. You would then know the reason.
As It Is now. many poultry keepers give
their fowls Indifferent care nnd then
wonder why they do not do better. If
they were to give the whole flock hotter
care they would And out where tho
trouble was and the results would bo
surprising to them. An experiment
this way Is a pretty positive demon
stration. Make "care" an important
factor In your poultry work.
