birds sold for a l)0Ct0r
dollar that are ^
from good stock, _ ..
but they are few and far between. >o
man nr woman would put a lot of time
In selecting any mating stock and then
sell the grown bird* for a dollar each.
In the first place, good parent stock can
not be purchased for that price, and
how could anyone expect to make any
thing by selling the offspring for so
low a figure? You can make up your
mind when you BUY cheap birds that
you GET cheap hints. When you pay a
fair pries, you get birds from good
parent stock, well bred, and which will
produce not o lot of culls but a lot of
nicely marked birds. So don t think
that 'you have a bargain In the dollar
bird, for If you are breeding to any
purpose, you will find your mistake,
and meantime you have lost both time
nn.i money In gelling started. If you
buy good stock at the start, you will
save In time and money, and later can
afford to charge n fair price for tho
birds that you raise. You will nnd
people who have this dollar stuff for
sale, and some of It may be good, but
the most Is bad. Don't take the chance
as long ns It means so much to you In
getting your start In poultry work; bet
ter have a trio of good birds than a
hundred poor ones.
MILK AS A CONDITIONER.
An English breeder In a recent Issue
of Poultry speaks of the value of milk
as follows: "Nowadays, condition plays
such an Important part in tho success
ful exhibiting of a bird that only two
or three weeks special feeding will In
sure Its being put down In nrat-raU
form. Personally, 1 think the finest
'conditioner' that could bo desired is
milk, and from what 1 have seen among
big Rock and Wyandotte exhibitor* in
the North und elsewhere I should say
this opinion is shared by a good many.
The extraordinary value of It In this
direction Is. 1 believe, known to but few
amateurs; at any rate, very few take
advantage of It. In any useful way. To
be really efficacious, It must play a part
In almost everything the fowl eats or
drinks for at least a fortnight. The
drinking troughs must be filled with It
twice a day, and the mashes likewise
must he mixed entirely with it. Given
this contlnunlly, the birds that are In
tended for show will quickly come to
hand and be In prime condition when
they are wanted. The other Items of
dietary should he Quite aa usual. Spe
cial dieting and extra feeding are quite
unnecessary and Indeed undesirable be
cause show fowls thrive far better when
treated like ordinary beings, nnd It Is
my experience that the more one fusses
about one's best birds the worse they
fare and the less keen become thir ap
atites. They must be kept clean, how
ever, and everything around them mutt
be clean and neat. Time spent attend
ing to these matters Is time well spent.
Vessels in which milk hus been placed
require special attention, as milk Is apt
lo coagulate In the bottom, the effects
•f which are far from salutary.”
The above advice Is sound and, If
followed, good results are bound to fol
low. Milk is not fed aa extensively to
chicken* In the United States ns In
England and Canada, except In a few
localities near Philadelphia and Wash
ington, where milk-fed chickens for
market are largely and profitably pro
duced. But there are a few fanciers
who fully realize the great value of
milk, and one In particular. George W.
Mitchell, uses a llbcmi supply to grow
Ids famous Partridge Cochins while his
manager, Adolph Anderson, has pro
duced the largest and finest White Co
chins in the country by using the milk
diet liberally. Mr. McNeil, of Canada.
Is another believer In milk as food, nnd
•where length of fenther Is desired, the
lacteal fluid Is superior to all other
foods. Years ago. when engaged In
dairy farming, we used considerable
milk for the young chickens, giving li
to them from the start, but we diluted
It with one-half boiling water, which
•we found kept the milk In better con
dition In warm weather.
