LaOrangs, Ga.—City council at apodal session held last night granted licensee for six near-beer saloons In this city. Hlll-st. will be paved from Junction of Prince to Billups, with graphalytlc sidewalks on both sides of the strest. Billups will be paved from Hill to Cobb. New sldewulks w ill be built along Billups and Cobb. Hut one other city has made a formal hid for tills convention—Toronto—and It Is believed that the claims of the Canadian city will be sidetracked 111 favor of Atlanta, an many members of the association have expressed their de sire to hold a convention In the South land. The association met six years ago In New Orleans, and the treatment accorded them while there has made those who attended that meeting anxious to return to Dixie. The meeting at the University club Thursday wo* attended by members of the Chamber of Commerce and repre sentatives from the Georgia School of Technology, and many local sclentlflc organizations. Immediately after the meeting Sec retary Cooper, of the Chamber of Com merce. sent a telegram-to Washington. Inviting the association to come to At lanta In 1913. The 1912 convention will be held In Cleveland. It will be neeessary to raise *2.000 In the 'city to flnance the convention. One thousand dollars of this has been guar anteed by the scientific societies rep resented at Thursday's meeting, and the balance will be raised by the Cham ber of Commerce.- Among the organizations represented at the meeting were the University club, American Chemical society. POSTOFFICE BOX RENTS GO UP WITH PROSPERITY The announcement by the postoffice department that private box rents at the local postofTIce would be raised at the flrat of the year has caused much adverse comment In Atlanta. Evident ly believing that the scheme to advance the rates had originated here, Post master McKee has received many let ters fioin Atlantans upbraiding hint for raising the rates and accusing him of taking advantage of a monopoly.
